An education is an asset that lasts a lifetime, which is why most of us lay a lot of emphasis on getting a good one. Not all of us can afford to go to the best schools, but there’s where scholarships lend a very welcome helping hand. Again, not many of us are blessed with the skills and dedication that it takes to land the most prestigious or well-endowed scholarships that are on offer. If you’re on the lookout for a scholarship to bankroll your education, the pointers offered below will come in handy.

Sharpen your search skills: Very often, securing a scholarship successfully means that you know where to look rather than just hunting at random. Start brushing up your scholarship search skills much before you need the money; talk to people who’ve gone down the same road before you; do what you have to do to qualify for each scholarship; enlist the Internet and free online search services in your search efforts. Once you’ve shortlisted the ones that you do qualify or, read the applications from top to bottom. Get the documentation you need to support your application ready before you start filling out your forms. Be very careful to read each section and question before you fill in details about your personal and academic lives. Before you send in your application, check to see if you’ve done all that you need to correctly. Take care to send in your applications well before the due date. Some scholarships have post-by dates as deadlines, so read the instructions carefully to avoid losing out on good scholarships due to trivial technicalities.

Follow up on your applications: Your job is not over once you’ve sent in the applications. You must check to see if you’re received a reply every now and then. Things to Prepare Before Applying a Scholarship

Getting a scholarship for an overseas study is a competitive process. This is because many people like you want the scholarship, but not all can be awarded. The cholarship money is simply not enough to fund all at once. Also, the scholarship providers want to ensure that only the best, well prepared applicants are selected and so the money is spent rightly and efficiently to what it is intended for. So, you have to be a winner!

Lots of people have won scholarship. You hear this every time. But how have they done this good job? Are they luckier or more superior or intelligent than others? No, they are not! If you ask them about the winning secrets are, they may simply give you the following lists: things to prepare or consider before applying a scholarship.

Academic certificate and transcriptSoon after graduation, do not wait. Obtain your original academic certificate and transcript, and make some copies of them.

You need to certify them and, remember, that people at university are some times going somewhere when you need their signatures. More importantly, you need to translate both your academic certificate and transcript. Check around, there maybe some people have done the same.

This will ease the task. If not, they are yours anyway. When you are done, it is wise to get other people to see them. They may give you valuable inputs, even correcting misspelled course names. Again, you need signatures of dean and rector on the translated version of your academic certificate and record.

Research proposal
You need to decide earlier which study route you are going to undertake - course or research or both. If you prefer a course-based study, you do not need a proposal. But if you are going to do a research, you definitely need a research proposal.

Good research proposal require time and energy to construct. So it is always better to prepare it earlier. Basically, the proposal will not be much different to the one you have done previously in your research as part of your undergraduate study. This will include background, objective, problems or questions to answer, hypothesis, methodology, and references. These are the essences of a proposal.

When you are done with those basic requirements, ask suggestions from others. When the application is open, check if the scholarship provider requires a bit more to what you have prepared.

Letter from intended university and supervisorsDownload application form from the university website and fill it before send it back to the university. The university will respond you and issue you with a letter of acceptance. You may indicate in the form that you will begin your study next year, waiting for a scholarship which you are now struggling for. Most likely they will issue you with a conditional acceptance. They will keep reissuing this until you succeed with your scholarship application.

While your are in the website, go to your targeted department or school to find your potential supervisor. Even, this needs to be done first before filling in a admission form. The reason you will not studying in this university unless you have got an academic staff willing to supervise you.

So get their email address, and make contacts with them. In the first time, you just need to introduce yourself, mention your academic background and your research proposal, and ask if he/she is available to supervise you. If they are busy because there are many students already under their responsibilities, don't panic. Ask him/her if they know people around there who are still able to take additional students.

The good with the letter from university and supervisor when you have them at hand is that you can attach them to your application form and present them to the interviewers. These letters will increase your chances of winning the scholarship because the interviewers will so impressed that you are better prepared and have taken more advanced steps compared to other candidates.

Family
For those who are married, this must not be overlooked. Not all scholarship providers allow you to bring family members (spouse and children) with you. The majority is yes, but you need to ensure whether additional funds for family members are available or not. If not, this means you have to be prepared to fund them yourself. Even if they do provide additional funds for family members, there are always cost to be funded using your own money.

This is because the scholarship, usually, will only fund basic needs such living expenses, health insurance, health clearance before departure and visa. Other than these such as cost of transportation - international or domestic - are usually not covered and so funds for these have to be prepared.

More need to think if your spouse is working, especially if it is in a government institution or department. Will she be allowed to go with you or not? If, how are you going to overcome this. A discusion with spouse is needed here.

Work
If you are currently working, you need to check if your employer support you for a further study or not. If yes, it will allow you to go and may provide you with financial supports as well. Generally, government bodies support for human resource development of their employees and so this is not usually a problem for public servants. This is not the case for private enterprises, so many candidates working in these commercial bodies have had to maka a tough decision.

Health
Health status is another consideration for successfully obtaining a scholarship. Some people are fail or at least postponed to start their study because of health problems. So, if you intend to apply for a scholarship, keep practicing those healthy habits. Most scholarship providers will provide a health insurance to their awardees, but you need to make sure about what all this insurance covers. Does it cover dental and eyes-related health problems? If it not, then it is cheaper for example going to a dental practitioner or buying glasses here than there.

Driving license
It is advantageous to have a car there, not only to support your daily academic activities but also for your leisures. This is especially true if you are going there with your family members. But to do this, you need to have a valid license. Check with the scholarship or with experienced people whether a foreign license can be used in the intended country or not. This include different policies from one state to another. If students are allowed to use a foreign license, get one here or revalidate your old one. Obtaining a driving license there is expensive and time demanding.

So, these are things that you may prepare or consider before applying a scholarship. Remember that a good preparation equals to halfway through the whole process. Be prepared and win the scholarship!

Tips berburu dan memenangkan beasiswa ADB

Banyak orang mengatakan, baik melalui millist maupun forum-forum di internet bahwa memenangkan beasiswa ADB sangat susah. Memang demikian. Orang bijak mengatakan bahwa didunia ini memang serba susah, alias tidak ada yang mudah, tetapi tidak ada yang tidak mungkin.

"Anything is possible ... "

kata dalam iklan merk minuman produk amerika yang cukup terkenal itu. Ya .. anything is possible, semua serba mungkin. Sulit atau susah, sebenarnya relatif, tergantung bagaimana cara pandang kita.

Kembali ke masalah beasiswa ADB. Mungkin memang sulit memenangkannya, akan tetapi dengan persiapan dan metode yang efektif, bukan tidak mungkin, sangat mudah untuk memperoleh beasiswa ini, terutama bagi mereka yang ingin melanjutkan sekolah di luar negeri, baik untuk Master program maupun Ph.D program.

Langkah pertama

Langkah pertama yang harus dilakukan adalah persiapan mental. Dalam hal ini adalah keseriusan, kesungguhan, konsistensi dan pantang menyerah. Penyakit akut terbesar penyebab gagalnya perjuangan adalah lemahnya mental. Sebelum mentalnya kuat, sebaiknya jangan coba-coba, atau lebih baik mundur dari perburuan beasiswa, ini saran saya loh ...,
kenapa ...?,
gak akan ada untungnya ...,
gak akan ada artinya ...,
Habis waktu, tenaga, waktu, biaya, belum lagi pikiran, emosi, waktu luang, ....
cape dehhhh .......

Memang sih, mendingan dicoba, walau gak serius, nanti kan bisa dijadikan pengalaman. Memang betul, kegagalan adalah kunci keberhasilan, tapi itu untuk "kegagalan dalam kesungguhan berjuang", bukan gagal dalan "keisengan" dan coba-coba. Lulus syukur, gagal biarin.

Tolong bedakan, "coba-coba" dan "kesungguhan". Bagaimana kita akan tahu letak kesalahan kalau tidak sungguh-sungguh mengerjakannya. Sebagaimana saat kita ujian tulis (UAS atau UTS), jika tidak ada kesungguhan, berapa ratus kali pun UTS/UAS di ulang, hasilnya gak akan ada bedanya. Nol besar.

Jadi persiapkan mental. Mantapkan, dan pastikan, program studi apa yang akan menjadi sasaran. Ekonomi, Science, Sosial, Sastra, dll. Pilihan kampus mana dan negara mana, lebih baik di-nomor-dua-kan dulu.

Berangkat dari titik acuan

Selanjutnya adalah start perburuan. Kita pastikan awal keberangkatan. Untuk beasiswa ADB, mulailah dari situs resmi adb http://www.adb org. Dari sini gali semua informasi mengenai ADB. Saya akan arahkan lebih khusus lagi, yaitu ke Japan Scholarship Program dibawah ADB. Situsnya adalah http://www.adb.org/JSP. Pada situs ADB-JSP, hampir semua informasi yang dibutuhkan sudah tersedia.

Mulai dari prosedur pengajuan, batas waktu pengajuan, hal apa saja yang harus dipersiapkan, dan sebagainya. Jika bingung, klik bagian Frequently Ask Questions (FAQ), atau jika tidak ditemukan disana, kontak sekretariat adb pada kolom "contact". Berdasarkan pengalaman, respon mereka cukup baik. Saya selalu menerima reply kurang dari 24 jam atas pertanyaan yang diajukan.

Perburuan dimulai

Pada situs adb-jsp, terdapat kolom yang menjelaskan institusi/kampus yang bekerja sama dengan ADB. Artinya, jika dipilih kampus-kampus tersebut, maka ada peluang untuk mendapatkan beasiswa ADB. Berdasarkan pilihan program studi yang dijadikan sasaran, maka sebaiknya pilih disini. Nama kampus dan negara tujuan. Apabila tidak sesuai dengan keinginan, maka anda harus mencari jenis beasiswa lain selain ADB, Karena ADB hanya meng-cover kampus-kampus tersebut saja. Pilih salah satu kampus di negara tertentu dimana tersedia program studi yang kita maksud. Kontak pihak admission yang bersangkutan dan download semua form yang dibutuhkan.

Atur strategi untuk menang

Sulitkah ujian untuk memenangkan beasiswa ADB dengan saingan ribuan orang ? sebagaimana saya ungkap sebelumnya bahwa kesulitan adalah relatif, tergantung sudut pandang yang kita gunakan. Mungkin anda akan terkejut apabila saya sampaikan bahwa form dari ADB tak lebih hanya lembar dengan kotak checklist, apakah kita memenuhi persyaratan atau tidak. Saya akan uraikan salah satu contoh persyaratan yang ditawarkan ADB untuk perolehan beasiswa. Tiap tahun mungkin saja konten nya berubah.

Syarat memperoleh beasiswa ADB :

[ ] Anda harus warga negara anggota ADB

[ ] Anda tinggal di negara berkembang

[ ] Berusia kurang dari 35 tahun

[ ] Mampu berbahasa inggris dengan baik (tidak ada syarat toefl, ielts, dll)

[ ] Telah bekerja sebagai karyawan tetap minimal selama 2 tahun

[ ] Direkomendasikan oleh atasan dari institusi tampat bekerja

[ ] Diprioritaskan memiliki tingkat penghasilan per tahun yang rendah

[ ] Bersedia kembali ke negara asal segera setelah selesai pendidikan

[ ] ... dan lain-lain

Ini hanyalah sekedar contoh, dan biasanya, form seperti ini sudah disediakan kampus-kampus yang bekerjasama dengan adb. Tiap kampus mungkin saja mempunyai persyaratan tambahan yang berbeda, tetapi syarat umum kurang lebih demikian. Syarat tambahan hanya merupakan pelengkap dari syarat umum. Jadi, tidak ada tes, ujian dan lain-lain. Hanya isi checklist formulir saja.

Disarankan untuk mengisinya secara jujur. Anda juga akan ditanyakan berapa besaran gaji pertahun yang diterima (dalam US$). Strategi mencapai kemenangan dengan berdusta saat pengisian form hanya akan merugikan diri sendiri dan dimasukkan kedalam daftar hitam (black list) dan catatan hitam anda akan muncul selamanya.

Jadi bagaimana strategi untuk menang ? strategi nya adalah tidak lain anda harus bisa diterima dikampus tujuan. Satu hal yang pasti adalah bahwa Tes uji untuk memenangkan beasiswa ADB adalah tes untuk bisa diterima dikampus yang kita tuju. Apabila kita bisa diterima dikampus tujuan, maka bisa dikatakan hampir 95%, pengajuan beasiswa kita akan disetujui ADB. Kegagalan pada tahap ini, bisa dipastikan karena kegagalan kurang lengkapnya atau kurai sesuai dalam syarat administrasi.

Tinggal masalahnya adalah bagaimana caranya agar kita bisa memperoleh ijin masuk kampus atau diterima sebagai mahasiswa dikampus tersebut, dan ini sangat tergantung pada syarat apa yang diminta oleh kampus tersebut, dan ini dapat dipastikan, tiap kampus akan memiliki persyaratan yang berbeda, tergantung kebutuhan.

Kembali kepada mental. Terus berjuang pantang mundur, belum tentu kita lebih buruk dari orang lain yang mejadi saingan kita, dan belum tentu juga orang lain lebih baik dari kita. Jangan takut gagal, karena kegagalan hanyalah sebuah awal dari keberhasilan. Jangan takut kekurangan uang dalam berjuang, karena apabila kita sungguh-sungguh, maka Allah adalah Maha Tahu dan rizki akan datang dari jalan yang tidak disangka-sangka.

Jangan takut kurang tidur karena kita begadang terus tiap malam demi mempersiapkan bahan tesis untuk ditawarkan keada para professor agar bersedia menjadi advisor kita, yakinlah bahwa, setelah tecapai cita-cita nanti, tidur kita akan lebih baik dan lebih nyenyak dari sekarang. Jangan lupa Do’a. Kerja luar biasa hanya akan bisa membuahkan hasil apabila diiringi dengan do’a yang juga luar biasa.

Recommendation Letters: Choosing Referees

Nearly all applications to graduate school require at least 3 letters from individuals who can discuss your competencies in a coherent way and recommend that you be admitted to graduate school. Many students find that it is mot difficult to select persons to approach for letters of recommendation. Others aren't sure of who to approach -- or if they have a potential recommender at all. Regardless of your situation, plan ahead.

Who will you approach? Who will you consider? Remember the main criteron of the letter of recommendtion: It must provide a comprehensive and positive evaluation of your abilities and aptitude. It should not be surprising that letters from professors are highly valued by admissions committees. However, the best letters are written by faculty who know you, from whom you have taken muliple classes and/or have completed substantial projects and/or have recieved very positive evaluations.

Professors provide insight into your academic competencies and aptitude as well as personality characteristics that may contribute to your potential to succeed in graduate school, such as motivation, conscientiousness, and timeliness.

Some students include a letter from an employer. Letters from employers are useful if you are working in a field that is related to that which you intend to study. However, even a letter from an employer in an unrelated field can be useful to your application if he or she discusses skills and competencies that will contribute to your success in graduate school, such as the abilty to read and integrate information in order to draw conclusions, lead others, or carry out complex tasks in a timely and competent fashion. Essentially it's all about spin -- spinning the material so that it matches what committees are looking for.

An effective recommendation letter is writtn by someone who meets some of the following criteria:

Is aware of your field of interest and the schools you are applying to.

Is able to evaluate your performance in your field of interest.

Is able to discuss your personal characteristics

Is able to discuss your capacity to work with others

Can discuss your leadership skills[/li

Can evaluate your level of professionalism (e.g., punctuality, efficiency, assertivness)

Can discuss your academic skills -- not simply experience, but evaluate your potential to succeed in graduate-level study

Evaluates you positively relative to others

Has some recognition and whose judgment is highly valued within the field.

Is able to write a good reference letter (i.e., is literate).

Many students become nervous when they see this list. Remember that no one no one person will meet all of these criteria, so don't fret or feel bad. Instead, consider all of the people who you might approach and attempt to compose a balanced panel of reviewers. Seek individuals who will collectively fulfill as many of the above criteria as possible.

The biggest mistake most students make in the recommendation letter-phase of the graduate school application is to not think about who to approach and simply settle for whoever is available. This is not the time to settle, choose the easiest path, or be impulsive. Take the time and make the effort to consider all of the possiblities -- each professor you have had and all persons you have come into contact with (e.g., employers, internship supervisors, supervisors from settings in which you have volunteered). Don't rule any one out at first, just make a long list. After you have created an exhausted list, rule out those who you know will not give you a positive recommendation. The next step is to determine how many criteria those remaining on your list might fulfill. And move on from there to begin approaching potential referees.

PhD scholarships are available in Finance at NHH. The Department of Finance and Management Science has a large, research-active group that offers a stimulating environment for doctoral studies and research within this discipline.

As part of the PhD Programme, students are obliged to work part-time (25%) as Research Scholars during their studies, providing teaching and/or research assistance to the Department.

QUALIFYING EDUCATION
Applicants are to have completed, or almost completed, a minimum of a Master`s degree (5 years` duration) in a quantitative field such as Economics, Business Administration, Mathematics, Statistics, or the physical sciences.

(Applicants lacking a degree in Economics or Business Administration, are recommended to undertake some coursework at the University level).

A good working knowledge of English is also required, as the entire PhD programme is taught in English.

2 PhD Scholarships and 2 Graduate Teaching Assistantships. Department of Economics, University of Kent (United Kingdom). The Department of Economics at the University of Kent (UK) invites applications for 2 (two) PhD Scholarships and 2 (two) Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) for the academic year 2008-09.

These will cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate and a maintenance grant up to £6,000 per annum for the GTAs and £12,600 per annum for the Scholarships. Students are expected to teach up to 6 hours per week. The awards will be offered for one year in the first instance, renewable for a maximum of three years subject to satisfactory academic performance.

Awardees will be registered for the PhD program in Economics at the University of Kent. Applicants will be considered simultaneously for both awards. Only successful candidates will be contacted and informed which award they have been selected for.

We accept candidates in any area in Economics, but we encourage applicants to check faculty research interests at http://www.kent.ac.uk/economics/staff/index.html. One of the Scholarships will be awarded to candidates with interests in the area of roeconomics/Monetary Economics and/or Financial Economics.

The studentship competition is open to all postgraduate research applicants. The ASEAN Foundation (AF) and the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) have entered into another agreement to develop high quality human resources within ASEAN member countries through the offering of the AF-AIT Scholarships.

The ASEAN Foundation, an initiative of the Leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), was established on 15 December 1997 to help bring about shared prosperity and a sustainable future for the peoples of all ASEAN countries that now include Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. This scholarship programme is part of the ASEAN Foundation Scholarships for Postgraduate Studies and funded through the Japan-ASEAN Solidarity Fund.

The Asian Institute of Technology, on the other hand, is an international post graduate institute founded in 1959, and is Asia's pioneer institution established to help meet the region's growing needs for advanced learning in engineering, science, technology and management, research and capacity building. AIT's mission is to develop highly qualified and committed professionals who will play a leading role in the sustainable development of the region and its integration into the global economy. AIT is based in Thailand and has affiliated centers in other parts of the world. Ten (10) full scholarships are available for ASEAN nationals who wish to pursue masters degree in AIT. The scholarship award will cover tuition and other academic fees, and living allowances for a 2-year programme.

Four (4) scholarship slots will be awarded under the project "Capacity building for Gender, Poverty and Mobility Analysis of Road Transportation Development in GMS Region". Job description
This project analyses the impact of recent policy changes on various aspects relating to the agri-food sectors in Ireland and other EU countries focussing in particular on Denmark and the Netherlands. Using the Irish National Farm Survey a micro approach is taken that allows specific research questions relating to:

1. productivity and competitiveness
2. the changing structure of production systems in terms of farm numbers, the role of economies of scale, specialisation and system switching
3. the wider rural community to be addressed. The availability of a comparable survey for Denmark and the Netherlands presents a unique opportunity for the Irish experience to be compared to that of similar regions of Europe facing the same set of constraints but with significantly different sectors in terms of structure, organisation and the role of government supports. This study will provide valuable lessons for policy by deepening our understanding of the important issues facing the agri-food sector in Ireland at the micro level and observing how the Irish experience compares to that of similar European regions. The project will also explore alternative uses for land post-decupling focussing in particular on opportunities in relation to organic farming and alternative energy sources drawing on the successes of the Danish experience.

The PhD student will be based at the Department of Economics, Trinity College Dublin. The student will spend some time at the University of Kent in the UK and at the University of Wageningen in the Netherlands working with leading economists on farm survey data and project related modelling issues.

1. Financial Assistance
The Department of Financial Economics has available a number of PhD stipends starting in September 2008. The stipends are for a four year period and offer NOK315,000 per annum (approx. US$55,000) and also cover tuition fees. Each stipend contains a 35 hour per year teaching duty which usually consists of teaching assistant work. Academically excellent students should have a MSc in Finance or closely related subject.

2. Program Structure
The PhD in Finance is taught entirely in English and is structured such that the first year of study covers course work and exams (60 ECTS credits). Project Description:

Mental reasoning about spatial environments often involves specific and task-sensitive spatio-analogical or quasi-pictorial mental representations. Mental processes dynamically construct and explore these representations to obtain desired spatial information and they do so with restricted working memory capacities. One goal of the project R1-[ImageSpace] is to build a cognitive architecture which comprises the components and processes necessary to accurately model human spatial cognition.

A second focus is on how to best employ such architectures in applications that assist humans in spatial cognition tasks (e.g., in architectural design and spatial planning). Eye tracking and other behavioral methods are used to clarify the theoretical basis of the modeling (such as the role of visual attention in mental spatial reasoning). Qualifications:

Successful applicants will have expertise in computer science / artificial intelligence and cognitive science and will hold an excellent master or diploma degree in computer science, cognitive science, or a related field. [Spain] - Scholarships for the Graduate Program in Economics and Finance

The basic graduate offering at CEMFI consists of its Master in Economics and Finance and its PhD program in Economics. Unlike many Master programs in the US and elsewhere, ours is self-contained and offers a well respected qualification.

CEMFI grants a subset of its Master students exemptions from the tuition fee and/or scholarships for living expenses amounting up to EUR 10,000 per year. They are granted according to academic merit. Also, the Fundación Carolina, in cooperation with the Fundación BBVA, has endowed four scholarships for Latin American students of the Master. These scholarships amount to 1,200 euros per month for housing and subsistence, over 19 months, plus 2 additional months for students who participate in a Summer internship program. They also cover the Master's tuition, travel expenses and medical insurance.

An important distinguishing feature of our Master is that it lasts for two years, the second being essential for shaping the skills of our graduates, as follows. First year: Basic graduate course work and some optional subjects. Second year: Specialized courses and research training through a Master thesis. Our ratio of students to faculty is between four and five. Thus we can devote a lot of attention to each student. This is particularly important for the Master thesis, where the faculty provides guidance to a unique degree.

Members of CEMFI’s faculty publish in top journals and are research leaders in their fields. They also edit prestigious journals and are key players at leading learned societies such as the European Economic Association and the Econometric Society.

Our Master students get very good jobs as economists. For example, in positions dealing with portfolio and risk management, macroeconomic forecasting, policy evaluation, or microeconomic consultancy. Our reputation is 20 years old and CEMFI provides a strong signal of quality, regularly confirmed by the market. Moreover, we run an experienced and efficient job placement service.

Students interested in furthering their research training, either because they aim at a professional career with a stronger research content or because they aim at an academic position, will continue to develop their research skills for another three years and complete the PhD program. PROJECT ABSTRACT:

Accurate wind wave models are essential for all elements of extreme air-sea interaction, including loads on structures, upper-ocean mixing and bottom boundary layer formation. At present, physics of such models is mostly based on theory and experiments applicable to moderate wind/wave situations, which physics is then extrapolated to extreme conditions. Since air-sea interaction at such tropical cyclones is known to be different, the models manifest inconsistent results. This is a major concern for engineering design applications. The project is intended to produce, parameterise, implement and test new energy source/.sink functions for the wave forecast models, based on direct measurements in the extreme tropical cyclones and on recent theoretical advances in this field.

Science at the service of safe food production and animal health

The Veterinary and Agrochemical Research Centre (VAR) is a Federal Public Scientific Institution located on two campuses at Uccle and Tervuren, near Brussels. In the framework of sustainable and socially acceptable agriculture, the VAR, through scientific research, expert advice, and the provision of services, contributes to a pro-active policy as regards safe food production, animal health, and public health on the federal and international levels.

To fulfill this task, 60 scientific and 150 technical staff are active in applied research in the fields of transmissible animal diseases, and of safety of animal and crop products. To support its growth and research activities carried out at the Department of Bacteriology and Immunology, VAR is currently seeking candidates for a PhD position.

Framework and tasks Paratuberculosis or Johne's disease is an enzootic bacterial disease in ruminants, due to Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map), characterised by a chronic and fatal diahrrea. Its prevalence has reached endemicity in European dairy herds and in the sheep, goat and deer farming sectors, with 70-80% herd prevalence in some regions. Paratuberculosis is also responsible for persistant environmental contamination of pastures and water catchment areas. Current diagnostic methods lack sensitivity, and current vaccines have little impact on the prevalence of infection; therefore both require improvement for disease control.

The aim of this research is to explore and optimise the diagnostic and vaccine potential of recently identified Map antigens in cattle. For this purpose diagnostic antigen candidates will be targeted to Antigen Presenting Cell (APC) surface receptors in a recombinant fusion strategy to enhance antigen in vitro uptake and presentation, and vaccine candidates will be targeted to cattle dendritic cell surface markers to enhance and modulate antigen presentation.

The research supports ongoing programs on M. bovis diagnosis and Map antigen discovery at the Veterinary Agrochemical Research Centre, and should lead to a PhD at Université Libre de Bruxelles. It will be carried out in both institutions under joint supervision of Dr M. Govaerts, VAR, and Prof dr M. Moser, ULB, in collaboration with external partners. The candidate will be recruited by VAR under a one-year, twice renewable research contract.

Since air-sea interaction at such tropical cyclones is known to be different, the models manifest inconsistent results. This is a major concern for engineering design applications. The project is intended to produce, parameterise, implement and test new energy source/.sink functions for the wave forecast models, based on direct measurements in the extreme tropical cyclones and on recent theoretical advances in this field.

PROJECT ABSTRACT:

Over the past 20 years satellite-based radar altimeters have made measurements of ocean wave conditions. During this period of time a total of 7 different altimeter missions have been flown. The combined database represents the most comprehensive dataset ever developed of global wave conditions. This project involves developing a combined database from these separate missions and then applying this to the determination of extreme wave conditions at any location on the global oceans. The resulting database has the potential to drastically change the way in which ocean wave design is undertaken.

School of Pharmacy of ITB is going to hold the First International Symposium On Molecular Pathogenesis:"Recent Advances on Molecular Pathogenesis and Applications to Pharmaceutical Product Development". The symposium will be held in January 15th, 2008 in ITB-Bandung. This International Symposium is held in conjunction with research collaboration beetween ITB and University of Groningen,The Netherlands. The Symposium focuses on the current status and on the future of molecular pathogenesis as well as new strategies for molecular pathogenesis-based therapies, as they are developed from basic research in microbial and cancer pathogenesis to be applied in infectious and cancer treatments.

There will be several excellent and well known speakers from overseas universities (NUS, University of Groningen, etc.) in this symposium. These speakers will share their expertise and their experience about recent development on molecular pathogenesis. The topics are about nanotechnology for cancer treatment-that will be presented by well known scientist, Prof. Shi Sen Feng from National University of Singapore-, quorum sensing, molecular farming, protein secretion system, vaccine development, synthetic genes, and many more interesting topics.

Addition to the symposium, there will be post symposium workshop: "Synthetic Genes and Their Uses for Various Applications".

Australian Labor's International Unit and the University of Sydney's Graduate School of Government (GSG) are offering 15 scholarships to take part in a groundbreaking short course for political and policy advisors from Asia and the Pacific as part of the Australian Political Parties for Democracy Program (APPDP). Selffunding applicants will also be considered.

The five day program emphasises practical skill development. It will cover policy negotiation, the public service, public policy implementation, advisory skills, the role of the member's office and the relationship between policy making and political campaigning. Course presenters are all practitioners with extensive experience in politics and public service. The program will include attachments to ministerial offices in New South Wales.

For consideration for this course, you will have 3-5 years working in a legislator's office, an undergraduate degree or alternative qualification and accredited English language competence (either a formal test score, completion of study in English or completion of an assignment/essay).

The School of Law invites applications for five postgraduate research scholarships available from October 2008. These scholarships cover *fees and a maintenance grant* totalling £16,500* per annum. Each scholarship is available for a period of one year initially, with the expectation of renewal for a further two years, subject to satisfactory performance in degree studies.

These scholarships are available in most areas of law in which the School is able to offer supervision and also interdisciplinary projects that have a legal aspect.

The criteria for award of the scholarships will be qualifications and potential (as revealed in grades, references and in other ways); performance at interview, if any; the quality of the research proposal; and practical experience and knowledge relevant to the area of research. Preference will be given to students who have applied for ORS awards and for International Office Scholarships through Nottingham.

The Department of Marketing and Statistics at Aarhus School of Business, University of Aarhus (ASB) Denmark, invites applications for a PhD scholarship within the area of Innovation Management starting 1 March 2008.

Innovation Management is a focus area for the department's research. In the field of Innovation Management, the Department has close research cooperations with the Copenhagen Business School (CBS) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). These networks can be leveraged by the applicant.

The applicant is expected to do his/her PhD work in the following topic areas:
- Lead user innovation and entrepreneurship
- Emerging organizational forms for innovation and new business development

The PhD scholarship is partly financed by the EBST-project "Development of a model for lead-user based entrepreneurship" and will be carried out in close collaboration with the research activities going on in this project.

EBST is a department of the Danish Ministry for Economic and Business Affairs (www.ebst.dk). The project is a cooperation project between LEGO and Aarhus School of Business. A PhD student in Denmark must complete an individually planned PhD course programme within the relevant research area and conduct a research project under the supervision of experienced senior researchers. As part of the PhD scholarship the applicant will be enrolled in the PhD programme comprising a number of courses within the relevant research area.

The PhD student is also expected, as part of the programme, to spend some time (up to six months), with coverage of travel and accommodation expenses, at another - often foreign - research institution. During the programme, the PhD student is further expected to gain teaching experience within the subject area as well as experience with other forms of dissemination of research results. ASB also finances participation in relevant PhD courses and scientific conferences.

Conditions of employment

The PhD fellowship has a duration of three years. Graduates and students expecting to complete their study programme in the near future may apply for the fellowship. The employment is covered by a national collective agreement.

The European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE), the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) and the Venice International University (VIU) are pleased to announce their annual European Summer School in Resource and Environmental Economics for postgraduate students.

The 2008 Summer School will take place from the 6th to the 12th of July, at the VIU campus on the Island of San Servolo, in Venice, located just in front of St. Mark's Square. The theme of this Summer School is Space in Unified Models of Economy and Ecology.

The purpose of this Summer School is to review and present methods of modeling spatial problems in ecological economics, and to show how these methods can be used in environmental and resource management. In this context the Summer Schools is expected to cover issues associated with:
- the use of diffusion processes to model evolution in time and space;
- the implications of "the Turing mechanism" for diffusive instability, and the emergence of steady state spatial patterns;
- the control of diffusion processes in ecological/economic models which evolve in time and space; - applications of spatial methods to environmental and resource management and regulation problems, where space is important as in cases of patchy environments, species movements, pollution diffusion. These problems could include harvesting of renewable resources, management of pollution diffused in space, bioinvasions, elements of spatial econometrics and GIS.

ADMISSION AND SCHOLARSHIPS

The Summer School is targeted to doctoral and post-doctoral students. Admission is conditional on the presentation by each student of his/her doctoral work; therefore applicants normally need to be advanced in their PhD to have produced at least one substantive chapter, but not to have completely finished their thesis. Application is restricted to current EAERE members, both European and non European citizens. Women are encouraged to apply. The Erasmus Mundus Program offers scholarships to non-European students and scholars to participate in the interdisciplinary Advanced Master's Course in International Co-operation and Urban Development. The English taught program is jointly offered by the Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany), the Universitænbsp; Tor Vergata in Rome, the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya in Barcelona and the Université Pierre Mendés France in Grenoble and leads to a double degree. Applicants for student scholarships (value € 42.000,- over two years each) should have concluded previous studies of a minimum of 4 years with excellent results in a career related to urban development and have professional working experience of a minimum of one year.

Scholars from outside Europe may apply for short term bursaries (€4000,- per month) to teach and conduct research at one of the above mentioned universities.

The Women's Leadership Scholarship (WLS) program (formerly the Native Leadership Scholarship) creates educational opportunities for women activists, grassroots leaders, and organizers from the Global South and/or from indigenous groups. Scholarships

The WLS Selection Committee awards four to eight scholarships per year, up to US$25,000 per academic year for a maximum of two years. The awards help the recipients meet the costs of tuition, fees, books, educational supplies, housing, maintenance, and travel to and from the home country and the educational institution. WLS awards are paid directly to the institution in a student's account. For foreign women intending to study at U.S. universities, WLS funding for expenses other than tuition and books is subject to a 14% U.S. tax.

Eligible candidates include women leaders from the Global South and/or from indigenous groups who also meet all the following criteria:

1. They are committed to grassroots organizing and the needs of their communities or indigenous group.

The Institute of International Education (IIE) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies in Economics. This is a scholarship awarded by the International Monetary Fund to high achieving Asian nationals currently pursuing or intending to pursue a PhD in Macroeconomics or a related subject at a leading North American university.

Background:

In 1996 with financial support from the Government of Japan, the Japan-IMF Scholarship Program for Advanced Studies was created to train selected Asian nationals as applied economists to work at the IMF or in their national governments.

Award:

The scholarship covers all reasonable expenses for two years of graduate study in macroeconomics or a related subject, including one round trip airfare, full university tuition and fees, medical insurance, books and living expenses. The scholarship has an internship component at the IMF.

Qualifications:

- A national of an IMF Asian member country.
- Able to complete their PhD program by the age of 33 so not older than 27 at the time of applying.
- Academic background in macroeconomics or a related subject.
- Interest in working at the International Monetary Fund or in government.
- A record of high academic achievement. Minimum GPA of 3.3; Minimum Average GRE Score of 600 in Quantitative and Analytical; 500 Verbal.

Procedure for Applying:

Students generally apply for the Japan-IMF Scholarship either the year before beginning their graduate studies in economics or in their first year of graduate school at a leading North American university. The following must be provided by each applicant:

- A completed application form
- A one-page personal statement of not more than 250 words explaining the
applicant’s interest in working as an IMF economist and career goals, previous academic
studies and future research subjects, and other information as to the applicant’s
background
- A university transcript for the applicant’s prior studies and, if already a graduate student at the time of graduation, a current university transcript
- An original or a photocopy of the applicant’s GRE and TOEFL scores. (Applicants can use the code number 8401 for their TOEFL and GRE scores to be reported directly to

HYDROINFORMATICS: MODELLING AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR INTEGRATED WATER MANAGEMENT

Hydroinformatics uses simulation modeling and information and communication technology to help in solving problems of hydraulics, hydrology and environmental engineering for better management of water-based systems. It provides the computer-based decision-support systems that now enter increasingly into the offices of engineers, water authorities and government agencies. The Hydroinformatics course aims at enriching traditional engineering practice by introducing innovative approaches in order to open up for the participants much broader prospective.

The participants will learn subject groups comprising of:

1. Fundamentals, hydraulic and environmental processes
2. Information systems, GIS, communication and internet
3. Physically-based simulation modeling
4. Data-driven modeling and computational intelligence
5. System analysis, decision support and optimization
6. Applications : Coastal and estuarial systems modeling and Urban water system modeling
7. Integration subjects
8. Advanced topics

The programme is not a standard engineering programme. We often characterize it as a programme with difference. The difference arises in the extensive application of modeling, information technology and decision support tools for water management, in a challenging training programme with professors and top experts from leading universities and consultancies of various countries, that opens a range of future career opportunities. The founder of Hydroinformatics (Emeritus Prof. M. Abbot) does lecture at UNESCO-IHE. Participants often mention that "the course opened up new horizon in my professional life".

Most of the Hydroinformatics participants are financed through Netherlands Fellowship Programme. For this year, the programme is run directly to M.Sc undertaken for 1.5 years and the NFP will cover tuition fee and living cost.

Funding and Administration

The Asian Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is funded by a grant from the Ford Foundation. Its office in Bangkok administers the ASIA Fellows Awards in the region with assistance from partner offices in Beijing, New Delhi, Manila, Hanoi, and Jakarta.

The ASF Board Management Committee is composed of twelve educational and public leaders from the People's Republic of China, South and Southeast Asia, and Australia. The Board Management Committee selects the fellows, oversees the program and makes policy decisions.

Goals and Objectives

The principal goal of the ASIA Fellows Awards is to increase the overall awareness of intellectual resources in the countries of Northeast, South and Southeast Asia and to contribute to the growth of long-range capabilities for cross-regional knowledge sharing. The ASIA Fellows Awards seek to develop regional expertise, establish a multilateral network of Asian specialists from many disciplines, professional fields and countries, stimulate interdisciplinary research and inter-societal comparison, and contribute to new developments within existing area studies communities. The awards offer opportunities for outstanding young and mid-career Asian scholars, and professionals to gain knowledge of the countries in the region and an understanding of the contexts that shape global and regional issues through research. They enable the awardees to conduct research in a participating Asian country for six to nine months.

Eligibility

Citizens of and residents in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, the Republic of Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Master's/Doctoral degree or equivalent professional training and experiences (minimum of 3 years of university teaching experiences for scholars or 5 years of work experience for professionals.)

Applicants must be 45 years old or younger at the time of the application deadline. However, those up to 50 years old proposing to do research in the field of Humanities may be given special consideration.

Proficiency in English or in the language of the host country appropriate to the proposed research project.

Those who are currently enrolled in a degree program, or have just completed a degree program for less than one to two years will not be eligible to apply. Those who were a recipient of a Ford Foundation fellowship grant within the last two years prior to the application is also ineligible.

Conditions of The Awards

The proposed research projects for the ASIA Fellows Awards can be carried out in only one participating country (except the applicant's own) and under the following conditions:

No applicant can propose to conduct their research in Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan.

Applicants from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore cannot undertake research in each other's countries.

Applicants from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan can only apply to conduct their research in Thailand, the host country of ASF.

Any part of the proposed project that will be done in the applicant's own country will not be funded under the ASIA Fellows Awards.

The proposed grant period must be between 6-9 months. Once awarded, a fellow is required to conduct research at the proposed host country throughout the grant period. Splitting of the grant period or conducting research in the applicant's own country during the proposed grant period is not allowed under any circumstances.

While an applicant from South or Southeast Asia may propose a research project in a country within his/her own region, preference is given to applicants who propose to conduct research in a region of Asia other than their own (e.g., an award to an Indian scholar or professional for research in China).

Applicants should not plan to conduct their research in a country with which their home country has a difficult diplomatic relationship because of the uncertainties of securing an affiliation and obtaining a research clearance and visa for a long-term stay.

Fellowship awards are not for the purpose of completing requirements towards an academic degree (master's thesis or doctoral dissertations).

Fellowship Activities

ASIA Fellows awardees are placed at top-ranking research universities and non-academic institutions such as museums, archives or think tanks. Fellows should identify preferred placements in host countries. They may engage in an organized field research in the host country. Fellows are strongly encouraged to undertake some language training in their host country as part of facilitating their research. They are also provided the opportunities to present guest lectures, or to conduct seminars and workshops at the invitation of the host institutions. After completion of their fellowship, fellows can apply for post-fellowship awards of three months to further their research in a country within Asia, or for short-term travel awards to make presentations at overseas conferences and meetings. All fellows are required to attend the Orientation Program in July 2008, and the ASIA Fellows' Annual Conference in July 2010 at which they present their research results to fellow awardees and to scholars from the country in which the conference is held. They are also required to start the award by the end of December 2008. At the end of the fellowship, fellows must submit to the ASF office in Bangkok evidence of the results of their research project in the form of publications, photos of artistic works, audio/ video productions, etc.

This is the call for applications to the Erasmus-Mundus student scholarships for MERIT – the European Master of Research on Information and Communication Technologies (see http://www.meritmaster.org ).

MERIT is a European 2-year post-graduate programme taught in English at the following institutions:

- Universität Karlsruhe (UKA), Karlsruhe, Germany
- Politecnico di Torino (PdT), Torino, Italy
- Université catholique de Louvain (UCL), Louvain, Belgium
These scholarships are addressed for highly qualified non-European students willing to study the MERIT programme in two of the above institutions beginning September 2008.

The application deadline is 10PM (GMT) January 21st 2008 to do electronic data entry and upload of required documents in the on-line application tool. The documents that support your application must be sent to the admissions office by mail or courier and must be received at the MERIT admissions office by February 11th 2008 (see Calendar below).

FRAMEWORK MERIT is a research oriented Master programme within the guidelines of the Bologna process whose scope is Information and Communication Technologies.
The MERIT partners above have specific funding from the EU Erasmus Mundus programme to set up a scholarship scheme for third-country graduate students and scholars from the whole world.

This scholarship scheme addresses highly qualified individuals who come to Europe to follow the MERIT Masters academic program. Students have to take two 1-year terms at two different institutions to complete the 2-year MERIT Master programme.

ELIGIBILITY
Applications are sought from students in their final year of university programs in engineering, sciences, or an equivalent university degree involving at least 3 years of coursework. Applications from persons holding university degrees in these disciplines will also be considered. In any case, applicants should hold a university degree by September 1st 2008.

Applicants should qualify as `third-country nationals`, as defined in the Erasmus Mundus programme, all countries of the world - with the exception of the EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia , Finland, France , Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom), the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Croatia and Turkey)- who are not residents of any of the above countries, and who have not carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Students will be selected on the basis of their CVs, study and academic merits, recommendations, language skills (English), international test results (GRE), etc. Priority will be given to applicants whose background and interest matches closely with those of MERIT.

DURATION, CONDITIONS AND AMOUNT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships will be awarded for two years. In each of these years, the student will receive a total of 16.000 Euro in 10 monthly grants per year, for a grand total of 32,000 Euro. Note that the Erasmus Mundus scholarship also includes a yearly payment of 5,000 Euro for fees, travel expenses, relocation costs, etc.

This payment will be used to cover the MERIT tuition fees for non-European students (5,000 Euro / year). Note also that, if the scholarship is granted, no payments will be made until the grant recipient arrives at the host university. No payment advances will be sent abroad for covering travel and moving expenses.

Malaysian International Scholarship for Post-Graduate Studies provides opportunities for students from countries with diplomatic relations and bilateral cooperation with Malaysia to pursue advanced academic study in Malaysia. The purpose of this scholarship is to promote bilateral arrangement with partner countries on government to government basis, and to encourage students from other countries to study in Malaysia with the view to facilitate future collaboration and exchange of scholars in enhancing educational cooperation between Malaysia and partner countries.

Malaysian International Scholarship for Post-Graduate Studies are available for post-graduate studies at Masters and PhD level tenable at Malaysian Universities. The duration of the award is 36 months for PhD and between 12 to 24 months for Masters programme.

ELIGIBILITY

The scholarship is open equally to qualified candidate up to 40 years of age at the time of application. Candidates should at the time of application, obtain a degree or equivalent qualification with at least upper second class honours, (or CGPA 3.0) for Master’s programme; and hold a Master’s degree with good grades for PhD programme.

The candidates must demonstrate outstanding verbal, reading and writing proficiency in the English language through one of the following:
* Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or
* Test administered by the International English Language Testing Service (IELTS).

If deemed necessary, applicants may also be required to attend an interview and/or take an entrance test or English Test conducted by the Ministry of Higher Education or the Board of Admissions of the particular university.

Applicants must be in good health, both physically and mentally.

APPLICATION TO THE UNIVERSITY

University’s application for admission is solely the candidate’s responsibility. Proof of admission is not a pre-requisite to the award. Selection committee for Malaysian International Scholarship will only consider qualified applicants with outstanding academic achievement and professional performance. Interested applicants are advised to apply before the beginning of the academic year which falls on the month of July for most of Malaysian university. The scholarship awarded does not guarantee a placement in the university. Admission to any program is by way of applications to the university. Applications must abide to the requirement and procedure for admission set by the university.

VALUE OF AWARDS

Each scholarship consists of:
* a return air tickets from recipient’s capital city to Malaysia;
* an approved tuition fees by the respective university;
* a maintenance allowance at the rate of RM1,000.00 per month;
* a yearly grant for books and internal travel;
* thesis allowance, installation and termination grant.

No marriage/family allowance for accompanying spouse or children.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates to work on the topic ‘New Biodegradable Hydrogel Materials for the Delivery of Nitrification and Urease Inhibitors’ which is a collaborative project between the department of Chemistry at NUI Maynooth and Teagasc, Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford, Ireland. Two positions are available and these are funded by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Dublin, Ireland.

The overall objective of this project is the development of new biodegradable hydrogel materials that are capable of releasing, in a slow and sustained manner, nitrification or urease inhibitors to minimize the leaching of nitrates from soils and to limit the loss of nitrogen through gaseous emissions.

Applicants should have a good first or upper class honours degree in Chemistry or a related discipline, such as Environmental Science. Funding will be provided for a three-year period and this will include a stipend of €16,000 per year, the payment of PhD fees (EU rates only) and funding for travel.

Indonesia dan Meraih Beasiswa

Saya tergelitik untuk memberi komentar soal kans orang Indonesia untuk memperoleh beasiswa di luar negeri. Sebagai bangsa ketiga terbesar di Asia dan nomer 4 di dunia yang tidak putus dirundung bencana dan konflik, Indonesia sangat diperhitungkan di dunia internasional dan percaya atau tidak, cukup ditakuti. Saya perhatikan kuota beasiswa untuk orang Indonesia rasaya terbesar di dunia. Dari Ausaid dapat sekitar 300, stuned juga rasanya sekitar segitu, bandingkan dengan Kamboja misalnya (pas saya lagi tinggal disitu sekarang) yang kuota Ausaid cuma 15) dan Cina yang sampai tahun 2004 cuma dapat jatah 50 (padahal penduduknya 1.3 milyar).

Mahasiswa Indonesia di luar juga prestasinya tidak memalukan. Nyatanya sebagian besar penerima Erasmus Mundus dari Indonesia tidak pulang tapi melanjutkan S3 langsung. Ini bukti pendidikan Indonesia tidak jelek2 amat (meskipun terbatas yang di kota besar). Kalau saya bandingkan dengan pendidikan di Kamboja, China, Thailand, pendidikan dasar kita cukup bersaing (meski terlokalisasi di propinsi dan kota tertentu) dan pendidikan universitas kita cukup baik (meskipun mengalami stagnasi).

Lalu kenapa mahasiswa Indonesia di luar jumlahnya tidak sebanyak China dan India? dan kita biasanya kalah bersaing untuk kompetisi tingkat Internasional Memang kalau sseperti Ausaid dan Stuned yang sudah jatahnya Indonesia gak masalah tapi seperti Erasmus yang berkompetisi internasional kita sering kalah. Saya lihat ada beberapa kendala yang sudah membudaya

1. Mahasiswa Indonesia sering kurang inisiatif dan kurang informasi
Saya amati dari milis beasiswa saja sering ada email misalnya "saya pengen s2 nich bidang A, ada yang punya informasi gak?" atau "bikin motivation letter gimana ya". Saya akan lebih menghargai orang yang menulis email: "saya mau daftar beasiswa A, tapi bingung soal bla bla, mungkin ada yang bisa bantu?" atau "ada yang bisa kasih masukan soal motivation letter yang saya buat". Jadi coba dulu, kalau mentok baru tanya, jangan belum mulai sudah tanya. Perhatikan aturan tiap beasiswa, pastikan semua permintaan diikuti. kalau minta international TOEFL ya lakukan dst.

2. Seringkali terlalu pelit
Memang apply beasiswa tidak murah. Tapi saya selalu melihat beasiswa itu seperti ikan yang mesti dipancing. Kalau mau dapet ikan ya mesti beli kail. Ambil contoh Erasmus. Modal yang saya keluarkan untuk daftar erasmus itu sekitar 200-300$ untuk IELTS test, kirim berkas via DHL transportasi untuk legislasi dst. Tapi dari modal 200-300$ itu saya terima 45,000 Euro dan jalan-jaan ke 12 negara eropa, dapet ijasah, bisa kerja di PBB. Gak rugi khan? Untuk menutup 'kerugian', yang saya lakukan biasanya daftar beasiswa sekalian banyak. Jadi satu ijasah IELTS/TOEFL bisa dipakai untuk daftar 5 beasiswa, bikin aplikasi juga jadi sekalian, copy paste, minta rekomendasi sekalian 1 lusin dst. Kalau daftar banyak, ada yang gagal masih bisa berharap yang lain karena khan beasiswa cuma setahun sekali. Kalau sudah terbiasa daftar beasiswa, terbaca kog pertanyaan interview, bentuk form, kurang lebih sama.

3. Kurang Pede.
Saya sering bersinggungan dengan orang China dan India dan memang kita sering malu-malu dan engga enakan, gak percaya diri. Padahal kalau saya perhatikan teman-teman India saya, mereka cuma pinter ngeles, argumennya sering gak mutu dan memang bahasa inggris mereka jago sich. Kebetulan bos saya juga orang India, orangnya sangat moody, hari ini bilang A besok bilang B, kalau saya lakukan A menurut petunjuk dia yang kemarin dia marah, karena sekarang di otaknya sudah B. Pernah sekali saya marahin balik, menciut kog. Sama dengan temen2 bule. Memang mereka pinter ngomong, tapi lama2 kalau kita perhatikan, argumen mereka sering lemah. kalau bidang saya karena banyak berurusan dengan masalah di Asia dan saya orang Asia, tidak sulit merontokkan argumen mereka karena mereka menganalisa budaya asia dari kacamata orang barat jadi sering gak masuk akal menurut perspeksi mereka.

Saya sangat menikmati mempelajari budaya orang, tinggal di lingkungan budaya yang tidak saya kenal, jadi keluar negeri dan sekolah di luar negeri memang menjadi target hidup, makanya soal beasiswa saya kejar dengan serius. Puji Tuhan dengan background saya sebagai penari tradisional, dosen, peneliti dan karyawan LSM, saya sudah mendapatkan 7 beasiswa, 6 diantaranya studi di luar negeri termasuk Aminef, Ausaid, Erasmus, Ford dan mengunjungi 23 negara. Tidak pernah sekalipun saya keluar negeri keluar uang dari kantong saya sendiri, selalu gratis atau dari uang beasiswa. Jadi buat saya, bayar beberapa ratus $ untuk kirim berkas via DHL atau tes TOEFL sama sekali tidak ada artinya dibandingkan dengan apa yang saya peroleh dari beasiswa yang saya daftar itu.

Meraih Beasiswa Erasmus Mundus 2008

Bagi masyarakat yang tinggal di kota besar di Indonesia, mungkin nama Erasmus Mundus scholarship bukanlah lagi sebuah nama asing. Selama setahun kemarin, perwakilan European Union untuk Asia Tenggara, khususnya Indonesia telah aktif menyebarkan informasi tentang beasiswa Erasmus Mundus melalui koran maupun seminar-seminar sekolah di luar negeri.

Mungkin proses yang tidak 'umum' dan investasi awal yang 'cukup' besar untuk melamar beasiswa ini lah yang menjadi kendala kenapa sampai saat ini peminat dari Indonesia belum menunjukan peningkatan jumlah yang signifikan. Padahal kalo dilihat dari Jumlah quota yang disediakan khusus untuk mahasiswa dari Asia tenggara, khususnya indonesia, kita masih sangat ketinggalan jauh dibanding India dan Cina yang mampu mengirimkan hampir 100 orang pertahunnya.

Ada beberapa hal yang saya amati menjadi kendala bagi mahasiswa Indonesia khususnya:

1. Beasiswa Erasmus Mundus bukan merupakan beasiswa terpusat, artinya proses aplikasi tidak diurus oleh lembaga khusus seperti ADS atau STUNED yang memiliki perwakilan di Jakarta.

2. Proses aplikasi harus langsung ke Konsorsium Universitas di Eropa dimana beasiswa Erasmus Mundus ditawarkan.

3. Syarat dari proses apliaksi ke Universitas yang kadang cukup rumit dan memakan energi.

4. Investasi di awal berupa pengiriman dokumen yang cukup mahal (dengan DHL ato DHL)

Namun, kalo kita lihat keuntunganan dan kita coba kalkulasi kesempatan dari beasiswa ini, maka saya yakin anda akan sangat terkejut dan merasa bahwa kendala di atas tidaklah berarti.

1. TIDAK ada proses wawancara, artinya screening seluruhnya dilakukan lewat dokumen yang anda kirimkan ke konsorsium Universitas dimana Program Master Erasmus Mundus ini ditawarkan.

2. TIDAK diperlukan aplikasi double ke pemberi beasiswa (dalam hal ini European Union) karena saat anda mengisi formulir aplikasi untuk pendaftaran ke Universitas, anda tinggal mencontreng pilihan, 'apakah anda juga akan apply beasiswa erasmus mundus untuk program ini?'

3. Jika anda diterima di Universitas tersebut, maka KESEMPATAN anda untuk mendapatkan beasiswa erasmus mundus untuk program tersebut, sangatlah BESAR! Tinggal bersabar menunggu informasi dari koordinator program Erasmus Mundus tempat anda mendaftar, karena universitas yang akan mengajukan nama anda ke European Union untuk mendapatkan beasiswa, jika European Union setuju, maka anda sudah dipastikan anda mendapat beasiswa tersebut.

4. Ada quota untuk orang Indonesia sebagai bentuk pemerataan beasiswa Erasmus Mundus, sepengatahuan penulis, untuk 1 program Erasmus Mundus, minimal 1 orang Indonesia bisa diterima, untuk kasus tertentu ketika kualifikasi si pelamar memuaskan, maka dari Indonesia sendiri bisa langsung 2 orang atau lebih diterima untuk program yang sama.

5. Kesempatan untuk beajar di lebih dari 1 universitas dan lebih dari 1 negara eropa selama masa perkuliahan. Penerima beasiswa erasmus mundus diwajibkan untuk mengambil beberapa mata kuliah tertentu atau tinggal minimal 1 semester di universitas lain yang masuk dalam konsorsium program erasmus mundus tersebut. Umumnya universitas ini berlokasi di negara lain di Eropa. Artinya anda berkesempatan jalan-jalan sekaligus menikmati kehidupan di berbagai negara eropa yang berbeda-beda tergantung dari lokasi partner university.

Karena proses aplikasi lebih kearah paper based maka anda harus mempersiapkan sebaik mungkin beberapa hal sebagai berikut:

- Form aplikasi diisi dengan selengkap-lengkapnya dan sebaik-baiknya
- Buatlah Motivation Letter atau Statement of Purpose
- Gunakan CV standard europa (bisa diperoleh di http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/europass/preview.action?locale_id=1)
- Lampirkan seluruh dokumen pendukung dengan lengkap.

Anda tidak harus memiliki International TOEFL atau IELTS pada saat mendaftar, bisa disiasati pengiriman International TOEFL atau IELTS dilakukan setelah anda diterima di Universitas dengan kondisi khusus (conditional acceptance). INGAT : Anda diterima di universitas, maka kesempatan anda dapat beasiswa Erasmus Mundus sangatlah besar.

Beberapa temen-teman mensiasti dengan mengambil test Intl. TOEFL atau IELTS setelah ada kepastian dari koordinator kalo mereka dapat beasiswa Erasmus Mundus. Namun sebisa mungkin lengkapi dokumen ini pada saat awal anda mengirimkan aplikasi.

Proses aplikasi untuk Beasiswa Erasmus Mundus 2008 dibuka dari November 2007 - Februari 2008, tergantung dari program yang ditawarkan. Bahasa pengantar utama yang digunakan umumnya adalah bahasa Inggris, selama anda menempuh pendidikan, nanti akan ada kursus bahasa negara lokal dimana anda mesti mengambil program erasmus mundus tersebut untuk memudahkan proses adaptasi.

The Scholar Indonesia adalah sebuah acara kompetisi edukatif yang bertujuan untuk menjaring lulusan S1 terbaik dari berbagai Universitas di Indonesia melalui serangkaian proses seleksi yang dikemas dalam bentuk reality show yang unik, menarik dan mengharukan tanpa mengurangi ketentuan seleksi yang ketat.

Untuk tahun 2008, program ini memperebutkan 1 (satu) Beasiswa dari MM-FEUI untuk tahun akademik 2008 secara penuh (full tuition scholarship). Proses pendaftaran peserta dimulai dari bulan November 2007. Seluruh aplikasi yang masuk akan diseleksi secara ketat oleh The Scholar Committee.

Inti dari seleksi ini adalah untuk menggali unsur kecakapan, kecerdasan, emosi dan uji wawasan melalui permainan bisnis serta permainan psikologi hingga debat yang sangat sengit antar kontestan. Selain itu para finalis harus berjuang keras untuk meyakinkan The Scholar Committee (dewan juri) bahwa mereka layak untuk mendapatkan beasiswa.

Bagaimana Meraih beasiswa di Luar Negeri?

Sekolah di luar negeri bagi sebagian orang yang mampu mungkin bukan sebuah angan-angan. Namun bagi kebanyakan orang, melanjutkan studi di luar negeri merupakan sebuah mimpi yang harus diwujudkan dengan susah payah. Salah satu cara untuk mewujudkan mimpi tersebut adalah dengan mendapatkan beasiswa untuk sekolah luar negeri.

Banyak beasiswa yang ditawarkan bagi pelajar dari negara-negara berkembang termasuk Indonesia dan ada beberapa yang dikhususkan bagi pelajar Indonesia. Apa saja yang harus dilakukan untuk meraih beasiswa, berikut beberapa hal yang bisa berguna:

A. Informasi

Ini hal pertama yang harus dilakukan, cari informasi tentang beasiswa sebanyak mungkin. Anda bisa mencarinya dengan suft/browse di internet, menjadi anggota milis beasiswa (milisbeasiswa@yahoogroups.com), koran, kedutaan besar, bagi dosen atau guru di universitas masing dan kementrian pendidikan nasional, bagi PNS bisa di kantor masing2, Bappenas/Bappeda, Sesneg, dll.

Informasi yang dicari harus lengkap, seperti tata cara pelamaran, persyaratan nilai minimum, bahasa yang digunakan, nilai minimum TOEFl/IELTS, dokumen yang diperlukan seperti Letter of Acceptance, deadline time, syarat-syarat khusus (seperti hanya untuk dosen atau PNS), coverage (full scholarship, partial, atau sandwich) dsb.

B. Bahasa

Mendapatkan beasiswa bukan sesuatu yang mudah dan didapat dengan cepat. Banyak persiapan yang harus dilakukan, dan salah satu kendala bagi pelajar Indonesia adalah faktor bahasa. Kemampuan bahasa asing sangat penting guna kelancaran studi, karena kita akan sekolah di tempat lain dimana bahasa asing digunakan. Kebanyakan program beasiswa dilaksanakan dengan bahasa inggris, sehingga dari kemampuan dasar bahasa inggris dalam surat menyurat, hingga ke TOEFL atau IELTS sangatlah penting. Kemahiran bahasa tidak didapat dalam satu atau dua bulan, perlu berbulan bulan guna persiapannya. Untuk nilai TOEFL nilai minimum biasanya adalah 550 dan IELTS 5 (untuk Australia).

C. Pelamaran Beasiswa

Biasanya sebelum melamar, ada beberapa beasiswa yang mensyaratkan hal2 tertentu, berikut beberapa hal yang pernah saya alami:

1. Beasiswa program Bappenas.

Hanya PNS dengan minimum telah 2 tahun bekerja yang diperbolehkan mendaftar. Ada beberapa proses seleksi; seleksi berkas dan dokumen, TPA (Tes Potensi Akademik) dan TOEFL, Ada tiga jenis beasiswa yg ditawarkan bappenas:

1. Luar Negeri
Anda akan diberi kursus bahasa selama 6 bulan guna persiapan mendapatkan nilai TOEFL yg layak untuk melamar beasiswa luar negeri, spt AUSAID, STUNED, etc.

2. Double Degree
Dalam program ini, satu tahun studi di dalam negeri dan satu tahun di luar negeri dan akan juga diberi program persiapan bahasa selama 4 bulan untuk persiapan pelamaran beasiswa ke luar negeri melalui STUNED, Jepang dll.

3. Dalam Negeri
Untuk program yang terakhir ini kandidat yang lulus langsung studi di beberapa program di universitas di dalam negeri yang telah ditunjukan oleh bappenas.

2. STUNED

Program beasiswa ini di kelola oleh NEC (Netherland Education Center) dan anda bisa mencari infonya di website : www.nec.or.id. Secara umum langkah2 yang harus dilakukan adalah:

a. Karena NEC mensyaratkan bahwa kita sudah diterima di salah satu universitas di belanda maka carilah informasi program dan universitas yang anda ingin tuju untuk studi, ini anda bisa dapatkan via internet atau datang langsung ke kantor NEC di jakarta.

b. Lakukan kontak dengan universitas yang anda minati dan pelajari syarat-syarat yang harus dipenuhi untuk menjadi student disana.

c. Untuk stuned, anda diperbolehkan untuk mendaftar dan mengikuti tes beasiswa meski belum mendapatkan Letter of Acceptance dari universitas. Namun saat anda terpilih menjadi kandidat penerima beasiswa, anda harus bisa menunjukkan surat LOA tsb.

3. AUSAid.

Bagi anda yang ingin bersekolah di negeri kangguru, salah satunya bisa melamar ke beasiswa AUSAid. Program beasiswa ini cukup terkenal dan pembukaan beasiswa biasanya diumumkan di koran nasional. Bagi program master, ada 2 jenis program yakni master by research or by course. Program beasiswa yang satu ini tidak mengharuskan kita untuk kontak dan telah diterima di salah satu universitas di Australia. Kita cukup melamar dengan mengisi formulir yang tersedia. Jika ternyata kita memenuhi persyaratan, kita akan dipanggil untuk tes IELTS dan wawancara. Keduanya sangat menentukan.

Untuk IELTS anda bisa belajar dari lembaga2 kursus2. Dalam wawancara ada beberapa pertanyaan yang seingat saya ditanyakan:
1. Background, pendidikan, pekerjaan saat ini
2. Program master yang diminati, serta hubungannya dengan pekerjaan saat ini dan pembangunan indonesia ke depan.

Untuk wawancara saya rasa sangat krusial, karena jika IELTS sudah melebihi nilai 5 sudah dinyatakan lulus IELTS, hanya saja nanti saat masa persiapan bahasa akan lebih lama (sekitar 6 bln)

4. VLIR (Vlaamse Interuniversitaire Raad)

Beasiswa yang satu ini memang jarang didengar oleh para pencari beasiswa, karena memang tidak ada pengumuman di koran2 dan tidak ada lembaga perwakilannya seperti STUNED di NEC, dll. Namun jumlah penerima beasiswa VLIR dari indonesia jauh lebih sedikit dibandingkan dengan program beasiswa lainnya. Anda bisa mulai dengan memperhatikan informasi selengkapnya di: http://vliruos.be, kemudian pilih program master yang cocok dan sesuai dengan minat anda. Di setiap program, terdapat seorang professor yang merupakan ketua dari selecting committee di universitas. Sebaiknya anda kontak beliau dan juga browse untuk mencari info tentang riset yang sedang dilakukan oleh universitas tsb.

Salah satu alat para pemberi beasiswa utk meng assess kemampuan serta kecocokan seorang kandidat adalah dari motivation statement serta dari riset proposal. Tentunya akan lebih bagus jika background, pekerjaan anda skrg serta riset yang akan anda tekuni sesuai dengan bidang serta riset di universitas yang anda tuju.

D. Doa dan tawakal.

Selain anda berusaha juga doa baik dari anda sendiri maupun dari orang tua, keluarga dan teman adalah factor yang paling penting. Dan yang paling penting diingat bahwa hasil dari usaha anda adalah hak Allah SWT. Kita hanya diwajibkan untuk berusaha yang terbaik.

We are now offering a PhD scholarship funded from the prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Projects. The ARC Discovery project aims at developing a Web-based Peer-to-Peer (P2P) system that enables tracking applications (e.g., product recalls) to share traceability data efficiently and effectively across independent enterprises in large RFID networks.

The PhD research will be performed under the supervision of Dr. Michael Sheng from School of Computer Science and Prof. Peter Cole, the Director of the Auto-ID Lab Adelaide. The stipend of the scholarship is (approx) $19,616 (2007 rate) per annum (tax exempt) plus travel funds for attending conferences. The scholarship is available from March 2008 for 3 years of PhD studies.

ASEAN Research Scholars 2008 The Asia Research Institute of NUS invites applications from ASEAN citizens enrolled for a fulltime advanced degree at a university in an ASEAN country (except Singapore) for consideration as ASEAN Research Scholars. These fellowships are offered to current graduate students working in the Humanities and Social Sciences on Southeast Asian topics, and will allow the recipients to be based at NUS for an ‘in residence fellowship’ for a period of three months. The aim of the fellowship is to enable scholars to make full use of the wide range of resources held in the libraries of NUS and the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies. Scholars will be expected to commence on 1 May 2008, and to make a presentation on their work at the Singapore Graduate Forum on Southeast Asian Studies at the end of July 2008.

Successful candidates can expect the following benefits:
1) A monthly allowance of SGD$1,750 (inclusive of housing allowance).
2) A one time round trip travel subsidy by the most economical and direct route on a reimbursement basis upon being accepted for the fellowship.

The title implies a particular interest in transnational and diasporic interactions, the engagement with modern technologies and values, and new global or ‘glocal’ forms of identity.

3) The Cultural Studies Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Chua Beng Huat) consciously challenges disciplinary boundaries to address new topics, issues and concerns thrown up by the rapid globalization of contemporary cultures. ARI is interested in new understandings of the everyday life cultural practices of contemporary Asia, as in adaptations of older patterns in literature, and the performing and graphic arts, in rapidly changing contemporary conditions.

4) The Southeast Asia-China Interactions Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Anthony Reid) will welcome students in two project areas: The Cold War in Asia, relating particularly to relations between the two Chinas (CCP and KMT) and the parties, movements and governments of Southeast Asia; and issues of heritage recovery and archaeology in Aceh and Sumatra more generally.

ARI is a university-level institute formed in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the NUS. The mission of the Institute is to produce and promote world-class research on Asia. Scope of the Scholarship
- The ACE Scholarship covers the recipient's tuition, on-campus dormitory fees.
- The IPTD Steering Committee may reduce or revoke the scholarship award upon review, if the recipient fail to fulfill eligibility requirements for reasons such as inability to continue attendance at the university or conducts unbecoming a student of the university.

Duration of the Scholarship: Maximum one and half year.

1. Background

The Association of Rhodes Scholars in Australia (ARSA) has established a Scholarship Fund for the purpose of bringing an overseas Commonwealth student to Australia to consult with leading scholars in their research area and undertake research in Australia relevant to their thesis project.

The Fund comprises donations from many members of ARSA who are among more than 500 Australians awarded a Rhodes Scholarship since 1904 (see http://www.usyd.edu.au/registrar/rhodes/history.shtml).

The Scholarship is administered by the University of Melbourne on behalf of ARSA.

Applications for the Association of Rhodes Scholars in Australia Scholarship are invited from students enrolled in a research higher degree program at an eligible overseas Commonwealth university.

The Scholarship will enable the successful applicant to spend a period of between six and twelve months as a visiting postgraduate scholar at an Australian university to undertake research towards the fulfilment of the requirements of the research higher degree for which he or she is currently enrolled.

Although the Scholarship holder will be based at one Australian university, he or she will be encouraged to visit other Australian universities to meet with academic staff and postgraduate students who share their interests.
The Association is very grateful to the Australian universities who generously agree to host the scholars, and especially to the academic staff who co-supervise them during their time in Australia.

2. Eligibility

The award is open to women and men currently enrolled in a research higher degree program in a Commonwealth university outside Australia and approved by the Committee administering the Scholarship.

Awards are not normally made to students who at the time of their visit to Australia will be in the first ten (10) months or final six (6) months of candidature.

Applicants must be Commonwealth citizens and may not be graduates of an Australian or New Zealand university. Current and former Rhodes Scholars are not eligible to apply.

The Scholarship will be awarded for a visit to take place in the year 2008.

The Scholarship is not available to support students who wish to enrol for a degree in an Australian university. Holders of the Scholarship remain enrolled in a research higher degree program at an overseas Commonwealth university.

3. Frequency

The Scholarship will now normally be offered every second year.

4. Selection Criteria

The successful applicant will clearly demonstrate in their application

* an outstanding record of achievement and qualities of leadership in academic and other areas (eg in cultural, sporting or community organisations and through voluntary service); and
* the benefits of the visit to Australia to
- their research program,
- to scholarship in their research area at their home university, and
- their nation.

The Selection Committee will give careful consideration to the referees’ reports and to letters of support from both the proposed ‘host’ thesis supervisor in Australia and the Head of Department of the Australian university willing to host the visit.

The Selection Committee may also have regard to an applicant’s financial circumstances.

5. Stipend

The Scholarship will provide a grant-in-aid to a maximum of A$20,000, inclusive of the contribution to the Scholarship holder’s travelling expenses to and from Australia.
The successful Scholarship holder will normally be in receipt of a stipend from their home university for pursuit of their studies.

6. Applications

Persons who satisfy the eligibility criteria should note that the applications will open on 1 July 2007 and close on Friday 12 October 2007.

Applications with supporting material and referees’ reports must be received by Friday 12 October 2007 .

Applications should be in English, and should not be handwritten.

The Savannah College of Art and Design has a special scholarship opportunity for educators. University of Cambridge - The Gates Cambridge Trust cannot admit students to the University or to any of its Colleges. Applicants for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship must apply to the University of Cambridge in the normal way.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are competed for internationally. There is some variation in procedure between countries, and the competition may run along different timetables to meet the academic schedules of different parts of the world.

The Gates Cambridge Trust takes advice from the academic committees in Cambridge responsible for determining admission to the University about the respective merits of the applicants. The Formation Evaluation Society of Indonesia (FESI), an organization dedicated to the science of formation evaluation in oil, gas, and minerals applications, has funds available for scholarships and grants to be awarded during 2007 - 2008. FESI scholarships provide financial assistance to qualified under-graduate students pursuing a study program directly related to the science and application of formation evaluation.

Applications for scholarships are presently being solicited for award at the beginning of the 2007 fall term. The deadline for receiving applications for this award cycle is Nov 15, 2007, with all supporting documents such as transcripts and letters of recommendation received by FESI by Nov 25, 2007. Five FESI Scholarship awards of Rp. 5.000.000 per year will be awarded, with half of the total (Rp. 2,500,000) paid in December, 2007. And the other half in March 2008.

The University of Teesside is offering 12 full-time Research Doctoral Scholarships across a broad range of subject areas including: computing, social science, health sciences, engineering and history. The scholarships are aligned to key areas of research strength within the Institute of Digital Innovation, the Institute for Health Sciences and Social Care, the Institute for Innovation & Development in Engineering and Science and the Centre for Regional and Local Historical Research. The awards will be for a period of three years and include fees (home/EU or international rate) and an annual stipend of £12,600. Successful applicants should be in a position to take up the scholarships in January 2008 or shortly thereafter.

The Department of Economics invites applications for two vacant PhD scholarships within the following research areas:

1. Corporate governance/corporate finance (one scholarship)
2. Energy economics (one scholarship)

The scholarships within corporate governance/finance and energy economics are related to specific grants from the Danish Social Science Research Council. The scholarship on corporate governance/finance is embedded in a research project entitled "Families and Firms: The impact of family risk and organization on the governance of closely held corporations", directed by Prof. Morten Bennedsen (mb.eco @ cbs.dk). The Asia Research Institute is pleased to offer Ph.D. research scholarships from August 2008 in the following interdisciplinary areas:

- Asian Migration
- Religion & Globalisation In Asian Contexts
- Cultural Studies In Asia
- Cold War In Asia
- Sumatra Heritage, Archaeology And Reconstruction

The PhD scholarship is to be taken up jointly with the appropriate discipline-based department. This would normally be with a department of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, but where appropriate could also be with the Faculty of Law, School of Business or School of Design & Environment at the National University of Singapore.

Interested applicants are required to submit their application to ARI at the address stated below by 15th November 2007, indicating clearly both which ARI interdisciplinary area they wish to join and which department they would be attached to. The following interdisciplinary areas or "clusters" are offering scholarships:
1) The Migration Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Brenda Yeoh) explores the issues arising from increased levels of human mobility in the region, both within and across national borders. Mobility of high-level professional and managerial personnel, labour migration, both documented and undocumented, and human trafficking all raise theoretical and methodological questions and major policy issues, as does the role of migration in urban change.

2) The Religion and Globalisation Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Bryan Turner) explores the changing patterns of religious practice, belief and identity in recent times, particularly in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia. The title implies a particular interest in transnational and diasporic interactions, the engagement with modern technologies and values, and new global or ‘glocal’ forms of identity.

3) The Cultural Studies Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Chua Beng Huat) consciously challenges disciplinary boundaries to address new topics, issues and concerns thrown up by the rapid globalization of contemporary cultures. ARI is interested in new understandings of the everyday life cultural practices of contemporary Asia, as in adaptations of older patterns in literature, and the performing and graphic arts, in rapidly changing contemporary conditions.

4) The Southeast Asia-China Interactions Cluster (Research Leader: Professor Anthony Reid) will welcome students in two project areas: The Cold War in Asia, relating particularly to relations between the two Chinas (CCP and KMT) and the parties, movements and governments of Southeast Asia; and issues of heritage recovery and archaeology in Aceh and Sumatra more generally.

ARI is a university-level institute formed in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the NUS. The mission of the Institute is to produce and promote world-class research on Asia. ARI engages the social sciences and humanities broadly defined, and encourages especially multidisciplinary studies. Now home to six research clusters with a strong team of resident and visiting scholars, ARI works closely with the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Business, Faculty of Law, and School of Design and Environment in NUS.
