TITLE: Wave Modelling within Extreme Tropical Cyclones

BACKGROUND:

Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) and Woodside Energy Ltd (WEL) are seeking a suitably qualified student to undertake post-graduate study to develop a wave forecast model suitable for extreme tropical cyclone conditions.

About Woodside Energy Ltd

Woodside Energy Ltd. (WEL) is Australia’s largest offshore oil and gas producer and operator of the North West Shelf project. Over a period of 20 years, WEL has been conducting and sponsoring applied and fundamental oceanographic research. The issue of enhancing understanding of extreme tropical cyclones, and in particular improving the wave forecast under such conditions, is among the current priorities of the research sponsored by the company.

PROJECT ABSTRACT:

Accurate wind wave models are essential for all elements of extreme air-sea interaction, including loads on structures, upper-ocean mixing and bottom boundary layer formation. At present, physics of such models is mostly based on theory and experiments applicable to moderate wind/wave situations, which physics is then extrapolated to extreme conditions. Since air-sea interaction at such tropical cyclones is known to be different, the models manifest inconsistent results. This is a major concern for engineering design applications. The project is intended to produce, parameterise, implement and test new energy source/.sink functions for the wave forecast models, based on direct measurements in the extreme tropical cyclones and on recent theoretical advances in this field.

1) Honours degree in Physical or Mathematical Sciences (essential)
2) Strong analytical and mathematical skills (essential)
3) A good working knowledge of programming (desirable)

The scholarship is tenable for up to four years to support work in the area of stochastic and fuzzy modelling in the management of software development projects.

Successful candidates will have an Honours (or more likely a Masters) degree in Computer Science or similar technical discipline. They will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the software development lifecycle and have an interest in software project management. Strong development skills, preferably in Java or C++, will be required.

[Australia] PhD Scholarships in Terrorism Studies - University of Wollongong Australia

3 PhD Scholarships in Terrorism Studies Centre for Transnational Crime Prevention

Up to three Higher Degree Research (HDR) Tuition Fee Scholarships and University Postgraduate Awards are available for students to undertake a Doctor of Philosophy degree in the area of terrorism studies and/or transnational crime prevention. Candidates will be based at the Centre for Transnational Crime Prevention (CTCP), University of Wollongong, Australia ( http://ctcp.uow.edu.au/).

Applications are invited from candidates with backgrounds in a range of relevant academic disciplines, including international relations, criminology, psychology, law, policing, political science, strategic studies, and other related fields.

Topics of particular interest include but are NOT limited to:

• The nexus between terrorism and transnational crime
• The relationship between terrorism and other forms of political violence
• The relationship between terrorism and counterterrorism
• Regional perspectives and case studies

Criteria:

Applicants must provide a thesis proposal in which they identify an original research topic, convincingly argue its relevance and contribution, and demonstrate how they will examine the given issue in a systematic way.

• Applicants must meet the admission and English language requirements (for international students) set by the University of Wollongong.
• In order to be eligible for the scholarships applicants must commence their studies by August 2008.

Desirable: Working knowledge of a foreign language, field experience

Scholarship Details: The HDR Tuition Fee Scholarship will cover international student tuition fees (currently A$19,000 per year). In addition, scholarship holders will receive a University Postgraduate Award (stipend is A$19,616 for 3 years. Stipend is indexed each year).

Application Closing Date: Priority deadline for applications is 28 February 2008 for commencement by August 2008. Late applications may be considered depending on availability.

Over the past 20 years satellite-based radar altimeters have made measurements of ocean wave conditions. During this period of time a total of 7 different altimeter missions have been flown. The combined database represents the most comprehensive dataset ever developed of global wave conditions. This project involves developing a combined database from these separate missions and then applying this to the determination of extreme wave conditions at any location on the global oceans. The resulting database has the potential to drastically change the way in which ocean wave design is undertaken.

[Australia] Scholarships Open for Political Advisors Course

Scholarships Open for Political Advisors Course (4-8 Feb. 2008)

Australian Labor's International Unit and the University of Sydney's Graduate School of Government (GSG) are offering 15 scholarships to take part in a groundbreaking short course for political and policy advisors from Asia and the Pacific as part of the Australian Political Parties for Democracy Program (APPDP). Selffunding applicants will also be considered.

The five day program emphasises practical skill development. It will cover policy negotiation, the public service, public policy implementation, advisory skills, the role of the member's office and the relationship between policy making and political campaigning. Course presenters are all practitioners with extensive experience in politics and public service. The program will include attachments to ministerial offices in New South Wales.

For consideration for this course, you will have 3-5 years working in a legislator's office, an undergraduate degree or alternative qualification and accredited English language competence (either a formal test score, completion of study in English or completion of an assignment/essay).

[Australia] PhD Scholarship in Research of RFID Traceability Networks, The University of Adelaide

We are now offering a PhD scholarship funded from the prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Projects. The ARC Discovery project aims at developing a Web-based Peer-to-Peer (P2P) system that enables tracking applications (e.g., product recalls) to share traceability data efficiently and effectively across independent enterprises in large RFID networks.

The PhD research will be performed under the supervision of Dr. Michael Sheng from School of Computer Science and Prof. Peter Cole, the Director of the Auto-ID Lab Adelaide. The stipend of the scholarship is (approx) $19,616 (2007 rate) per annum (tax exempt) plus travel funds for attending conferences. The scholarship is available from March 2008 for 3 years of PhD studies.

We are looking for a highly-motivated, dedicated candidate who meets the following requirements:
- An excellent Honors (1st class) or equivalent degree (Masters) in Computer Science or a closely related field,
- Very good programming skills,
- Very good communicative skills in English, both in speaking and in writing,
- Experience within the fields of database, P2P, sensor networks, Web services, are of
advantage,
- Australian citizen and permanent resident are preferred but outstanding overseas students are encouraged to apply.

The Peace Scholarship Program is committed to providing opportunities for eligible students in selected countries worldwide to study abroad in Australia. About Mathematical Sciences at Monash University

The School of Mathematical Sciences at Monash University has an active group of staff involved in leading-edge research in applied mathematics, in most cases also utilising modern computational methods. Currently, there are about 20 staff and about 35 research students working in the broad fields of applied and computational mathematics.

The School is located at the Clayton campus of Monash University, which is situated in the suburbs of Melbourne, capital city in the southern state of Victoria, Australia. Melbourne is a modern city with an vibrant cultural life and a population of about 3.8 million (spread over a large area). It has a moderate oceanic climate, with average daily maximum temperatures ranging from 14oC (June-July) to 26oC (January-February) and an average rainfall of about 650mm.

Ph.D Scholarships at the University of Wollongong

Applications are invited for three full-time PhD scholarships (2 x Australian Postgraduate Award - Industry) and (1 x University Postgraduate Award and HDR Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship), tenable at the University of Wollongong within the Faculty of Informatics. The APA(I) scholarships are funded by an ARC Linkage Project grant, New Methods for Small Group Analysis from Sample Surveys, awarded to Professor Ray Chambers and Professor David Steel of the University of Wollongong. The industry partners are the Methodology Division of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics, the Centre for Epidemiology and Research at NSW Health and the Public Health Intelligence unit at the New Zealand Ministry of Health.

Accurate data for population sub-groups and between small areas are fundamental to good policy decisions in health, environment, economics and social issues. Unfortunately, national and state averages of statistics on unemployment, salinity, drought impact, and health often hide large differences at lower levels of aggregation. This local variation needs to be understood so that effective policies can be developed and carried out efficiently and their impact monitored. Using statistical models that combine survey data with other information about the groups of interest, this project will develop robust and efficient methods for providing information on these variations using data from large-scale national and state surveys. In particular, the aim will be to create new cost-effective methods that address the increasing demand for high quality statistics about the distribution of important social, economic, health and environmental variables within local areas and small population sub-groups. Implications for survey design for outputs at these levels will be determined, as will robust and efficient methods for analysing these data. This will lead to significant improvements in the data available for such groups and areas, allowing better targeting of policies aimed at addressing local differences.

The students involved in the project will develop skills in sample survey analysis, the theory and methods of modeling data with group structure and methods for small area estimation. Many of these topics are at the forefront of statistical research. The project will involve the development of innovative methodologies that will be directly applicable by the industry partners as well as by other organisations of great practical importance to Australia.

The students will work in a vibrant and growing research centre, the Centre for Statistical and Survey Methodology, at the University of Wollongong. The Centre comprises 10 academic statisticians, including four professors, and 15 PhD students. The project will involve joint work with, and visits to, the industry partners in Canberra, Sydney and Wellington, which will enhance the quality and relevance of the research and will provide the student with valuable insights into applied statistical research in government agencies.

The value of the APA(I) scholarships are currently AUS$25,627 per year for three years. The UPA will also provide a stipend of AUS$25,627 per year for 3 years while the HDR Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship will cover the full fee charged by the University for the degree of the PhD for 3 years. There may be opportunities to supplement this with tutoring or other casual work. Additional funding is available for computing equipment and travel. The project involves collaboration with researchers at the University of Pisa in Italy and the Centre also has close ties with the University of Manchester and the University of Southampton in the UK and there may be opportunities for students to visit these institutions.

APA(I) scholarships are open only to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens. However, the UPA is also open to international applicants. Applicants should have an Honours 1 or 2(1) degree in Statistics, or an equivalent qualification, by the end of 2007, strong research potential and be able to commence by the end of February 2008. [Australia] PhD Scholarship 2008 and Foundation Grants for Medical Application in Australia

Closing date - Friday 5 October 2007

In 2008, research grants will be available for research in the fields of BRAIN SCIENCES, DIABETES, GERIATRICS, LUNG DISEASES (excluding cancer) RHEUMATOLOGY, VISION SCIENCES and in the medical application of GENETIC RESEARCH.

The value of the grants is between $8,000 and $20,000. These limits will be strictly adhered to and is preferably, but not exclusively, for specific equipment.

A commitment for continued support cannot be given.

PhD Scholarship 2008

Closing date for these applications is 31 July 2007.

The Rebecca L Cooper Medical Research Foundation is offering a scholarship, to commence in 2008, for young science and medical graduates. The scholarship will be granted for the undertaking of a thesis study in the medical applications of Genetic Research at a recognised Australian University. The Scholarship is intended to support basic and clinical research training within Australian research units and as a precursor to more advanced study in Australia and/or overseas.

The scholarship will be granted for one year and be renewable for three years depending on satisfactory progress. Applicants should be about to commence their PhD or be in their first year.

Applications should include a 2-3 page summary of their research proposal, their CV, as well as a letter from their proposed supervisor and one other referee.

Applicants will be advised of their success or otherwise by the end of September 2007.

[Australia] PhD Scholarships in Photonics - Macquarie University

Novel solid-state laser development

The Centre for Lasers and Applications at Macquarie University, Sydney Australia is one of the leading institutions in the world for lasers and photonics research. We are seeking three candidates for postgraduate research scholarships (PhD) in the field of novel solid-state lasers. You will explore both experimental and theoretical development of new types of laser sources as a part of a young and dynamic research team.

* Mode locking using Raman crystals: Recently self mode locking of a cw fibre Raman laser has been observed, which we have identified as a new form of mode locking. We will investigate the formation of ultrafast pulses, performing a wide range of experiments using pulsed as well as recently demonstrated cw crystalline Raman lasers. Numerical models will be developed to explain results and guide new experiments.

* Ultraviolet continuous wave lasers: We will develop the first tunable CW laser operating in the ultraviolet region based on cerium-doped laser crystals, a relatively new widely-tunable solid state laser material. Using a combination of experimental work and numerical modeling, we will use high-repetition-rate picosecond pump lasers to achieve smooth CW operation of both cerium lasers in the UV region and Ti:Sapphire lasers in the IR region.

* Short Pulse and Tunable Microchip Lasers: Microchip lasers are solid-state lasers where the laser mirrors are directly coated on a thin piece of laser material. We propose to design and build a new class of microchip lasers that are broadly tunable. We will use Ti:Sapphire and cerium laser crystals and incorporate wedge etalon tuning elements. Systems for generating very short pulses (down to few 10's of ps) will also be investigated, including novel master oscillator-power amplifier techniques. We will also use these lasers for nonlinear optics including nonlinear microscopy.

[Australia] PhD scholarships in Ecological Modelling at Macquarie University

Two PhD scholarships are available in Ecological Modelling at Macquarie University.

(1) MQRES Modelling Climate Change Impacts on Australian Forests

Closing Date: 11 June 2007

Australian forests provide a range of important ecosystem services, such as wood production, carbon sequestration and protection of water catchments. Climate change is highly likely to modify how forests function, and land managers urgently need information about how these ecosystem services will be affected. To address this need, this project will develop ecophysiologically-based models of climate change impacts on Australian forests over the next century. Data assimilation techniques will be used to incorporate information from state-of-the-art climate change experiments, both local and international. Strong collaboration with experimental scientists will be encouraged.

(2) MQRES Modelling Climate Change Impacts on Plant Competition

Closing Date: 11 June 2007

Climate change threatens to change the composition of plant communities. Climate change does not impact on all species equally, so changes in climate will modify competitive relations among plants, with important consequences for biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. This project will develop simulation models to investigate how changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration, water and nitrogen availability combine to modify the outcomes of competition among different plant species. The modelling work will be informed by data from a long-term US experiment that manipulates atmospheric CO2, N deposition, rainfall, and species composition.

MQRES scholarships are available to Australian and international students. Applicants should have completed an Australian four-year undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline with first class honours, or demonstrate equivalent research qualifications from an Australian or overseas University. These projects would suit candidates with a strong numerical aptitude and an interest in plant ecology. Candidates should have a background in one or more of the following areas: plant physiology, ecology, pure or applied mathematics, physics or statistics.

The scholarship pays a living allowance currently $19,616 per annum, tax exempt (2007) and the tenure is 3.5 years full time, subject to satisfactory progress. Tuition fees will be funded for the scholarship tenure, with domestic students receiving Research Training Scheme (RTS) placement for their tuition, and International award holders having their fees sponsored.

Funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand, the New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships(NZIDRS) are a significant educational opportunity.
