[England] PhD Studentship in Psychology - University of Nottingham

PhD Studentship School of Psychology

*Evaluating emergency medical care simulation: The role of emotions, appraisals and individual differences*

This project, which is in collaboration with Dr Bryn Baxendale (Trent Simulation & Clinical Skills Centre: http://www.nuh.nhs.uk/qmc/TSCSC/index.htm ) and Professor Eamonn Ferguson (Psychology: http://www.psychology.nottingham.ac.uk/ ), involves the evaluation of the Trent Simulation Centre emergency medical training for Foundation Level 1 and 2 medical doctors. The study will involve predictors of performance (e.g., individual differences, mood, emotion, coping) across a number of simulated medical emergencies. The work will involve the design and validation of measurements for the observation of performance, and the analysis of observational data and tracking doctors longitudinally back into practice.

The successful student will be registered for a PhD (MPhil in the first instance).

A highly-motivated and enthusiastic student is required who should have at least a good 2.1 honours degree or equivalent in psychology or an associated discipline. They should also possess good communication and interpersonal skills. An MSc, experience working within the NHS or medical settings and a good working knowledge of multivariate statistics are desirable, but not essential.

Due to funding restrictions, this three-year studentship only provides funding for students from the UK/EU. The funding will provide a postgraduate stipend (which will be *£12,600* in October 2007) and home fees. However, international students are able to apply, but would need to seek additional funding to cover the international student level of fees.

Applications, with a covering letter and detailed CV, together with the names and addresses of two academic referees and a statement of research interests, should be sent to Professor E Ferguson, Risk Analysis, Social Processes and Health (RASPH) Group, School of Psychology, The University of Nottingham, University Park, Nottingham, NG7 2RD. Email: Eamonn.Ferguson@Nottingham.ac.uk .
