[Denmark] PhD – Scholarships in “Corrosion Reliability of Electronic Devices” - Technical University of Denmark

PhD – Scholarships in "Corrosion Reliability of Electronic Devices"

A 3 year PhD scholarship on "Developing innovative solutions for corrosion protection and prevention of electronic devices" is available at the Department of Manufacturing Engineering and Management (IPL) within the Corrosion and surface technology research group from 1st January 2008.

The PhD project is part of the "CELCORR – Centre for Electronic Corrosion" financed by Danish Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation under the Innovation Consortium Programme. More information on CELCORR could be found here: www.celcorr.com

Project background and content:

Corrosion reliability is a serious issue today for electronic devices, components, and bare printed circuit boards (PCBs) due to factors such as miniaturization, globalized manufacturing practices, and global usage. At present, no clear corrosion control strategy exists and the applied procedures are inadequate.

The present PhD project will focus on:

(i) Strategies for cleanliness of the PCBs and devices during manufacturing by understanding the contamination issue in detail,
(ii) Early detection/monitoring of corrosion/environmental effects during service by developing corrosion sensors based on a combination of array electrodes and quarts crystal microbalance, and
(iii) Formulating new protective coatings to make the devices more robust under user environment.

The selected candidate is expected to work closely with a Post-doc and another PhD student associated with this programme. Work involves co-ordination and travel between project partners and institutions abroad for collaborative work. The candidate may be asked to perform part of her/his research at institutions abroad specializing in one or more areas on interest for the project.

Candidates should hold a Masters Degree in Metallurgy or Materials Engineering or Chemistry or interdisciplinary subjects combining Electronics and Materials or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level.

The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. Information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies is included in the general rules of DTU, which may be obtained by application to the PhD programme office at tel: +45 45 25 11 76 or +45 45 25 11 77.

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.
