[Australia] Ph.D Scholarships at the University of Wollongong

Ph.D Scholarships at the University of Wollongong

Applications are invited for three full-time PhD scholarships (2 x Australian Postgraduate Award - Industry) and (1 x University Postgraduate Award and HDR Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship), tenable at the University of Wollongong within the Faculty of Informatics. The APA(I) scholarships are funded by an ARC Linkage Project grant, New Methods for Small Group Analysis from Sample Surveys, awarded to Professor Ray Chambers and Professor David Steel of the University of Wollongong. The industry partners are the Methodology Division of the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics, the Centre for Epidemiology and Research at NSW Health and the Public Health Intelligence unit at the New Zealand Ministry of Health.

Accurate data for population sub-groups and between small areas are fundamental to good policy decisions in health, environment, economics and social issues. Unfortunately, national and state averages of statistics on unemployment, salinity, drought impact, and health often hide large differences at lower levels of aggregation. This local variation needs to be understood so that effective policies can be developed and carried out efficiently and their impact monitored. Using statistical models that combine survey data with other information about the groups of interest, this project will develop robust and efficient methods for providing information on these variations using data from large-scale national and state surveys. In particular, the aim will be to create new cost-effective methods that address the increasing demand for high quality statistics about the distribution of important social, economic, health and environmental variables within local areas and small population sub-groups. Implications for survey design for outputs at these levels will be determined, as will robust and efficient methods for analysing these data. This will lead to significant improvements in the data available for such groups and areas, allowing better targeting of policies aimed at addressing local differences.

The students involved in the project will develop skills in sample survey analysis, the theory and methods of modeling data with group structure and methods for small area estimation. Many of these topics are at the forefront of statistical research. The project will involve the development of innovative methodologies that will be directly applicable by the industry partners as well as by other organisations of great practical importance to Australia.

The students will work in a vibrant and growing research centre, the Centre for Statistical and Survey Methodology, at the University of Wollongong. The Centre comprises 10 academic statisticians, including four professors, and 15 PhD students. The project will involve joint work with, and visits to, the industry partners in Canberra, Sydney and Wellington, which will enhance the quality and relevance of the research and will provide the student with valuable insights into applied statistical research in government agencies.

The value of the APA(I) scholarships are currently AUS$25,627 per year for three years. The UPA will also provide a stipend of AUS$25,627 per year for 3 years while the HDR Tuition Fee Exemption Scholarship will cover the full fee charged by the University for the degree of the PhD for 3 years. There may be opportunities to supplement this with tutoring or other casual work. Additional funding is available for computing equipment and travel. The project involves collaboration with researchers at the University of Pisa in Italy and the Centre also has close ties with the University of Manchester and the University of Southampton in the UK and there may be opportunities for students to visit these institutions.

APA(I) scholarships are open only to Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and New Zealand citizens. However, the UPA is also open to international applicants. Applicants should have an Honours 1 or 2(1) degree in Statistics, or an equivalent qualification, by the end of 2007, strong research potential and be able to commence by the end of February 2008. Applications, including a curriculum vitae, academic transcript and contact details of two or more referees should be sent to Prof Ray Chambers, Centre for Statistical and Survey Methodology, School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics, University of Wollongong, NSW 2522. Closing date: Friday September 28, 2007. Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents should also include proof of citizenship or permanent residency.

We welcome enquiries about the project or the Centre. For more information, please contact Professor Ray Chambers, ph (61) 2 42213809, email ray@uow.edu.au or Professor David Steel, ph (61) 2 42213823, email dsteel@uow.edu.au.

The answer is quite simple, really. Every student who plans to attend an institution of higher education should search for and apply for scholarships. This applies to all students, including high school students, non-traditional students, current college students, graduate students, etc.

Now, some students have ideas about why they won't get scholarships. They think that there are no scholarships out there for students with less than outstanding grade point averages or with poor standardized test scores. They claim that their parents make too much money or that they won't be attending 'traditional colleges.' They say that they are not minority students and aren't enrolled in a lot of extracurricular activities or involved in their communities. They even argue that they are not planning to attend college immediately after graduation, and so they won't be eligible for any scholarship funding at all. The list of reasons goes on and on...

Although some of these reasons may sound pretty legitimate and you have probably heard at least one of them before (maybe even inside your own head), they are false! Not every scholarship provider is looking for an academically gifted or actively involved student. Many scholarships are not based on financial need or minority status. There are scholarships available to students who want to attend non-traditional schools, like cosmetology schools, modeling academies, technical institutions, etc. And if you want to take a break between high school and college, do so...you will still be able to find scholarships for non-traditional, returning students when you are ready to return to school (just be sure to go back, okay?).

All college students should keep this thought in mind: There are always scholarships out there if you really search hard enough to find them. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. And once you've made up your mind to actually search for and apply for scholarships, the only challenging part is actually finding specific scholarships that you can apply for.

Just remember, don't limit your scholarship search, and try to find scholarships that match your unique student profile. Sure, your guidance or financial aid office probably has a list of a few scholarships that you can browse through, and you've probably heard about some of the more popular scholarship programs online, but there are so many more out there. There are even some $30 books out there that list thousands of scholarships, and you can do a generic search on the Internet for the word 'scholarship' and find millions of results returned. But by the time you comb through all of the scholarship listings to find out if you are eligible to apply, well...let's just say that you may be old enough to qualify for a free tuition program for senior citizens by then!

Your best bet in finding scholarships that you can actually apply for is to use an online scholarship search service that has sophisticated matching technology and pulls scholarship information from an accurate and up-to-date database. This will save you time as you look for scholarships that match your own unique set of experiences and background information. Just be sure the online service you use has a strict privacy policy for dealing with student profile data so that you don't get bombarded with unwanted mail, email and phone solicitations. College students (and future college students) take note: Don't psych yourself out before you start searching for scholarships. Scholarships are out there in all shapes and sizes to help you pay for college, and the only real reason you won't get any is if you decide not to search and apply for them!

Finding Scholarships on the Internet – What to Look for in a Scholarship Search Service

Okay, so you are ready to tackle that daunting task of finding scholarships to pay for college. And you want to use the Internet to expedite the search process. But there are so many scholarship search services out there – which ones should you use? How do you know what qualities and features to look for in a scholarship search service? And how do you avoid getting scammed while looking for awards? Use the following guide to determine what to look for and to assist you in finding the service that will best fit your scholarship search needs.

* Profile Matches Are Key: First and foremost, find a scholarship search service that has sophisticated matching technology. A good scholarship search service will match the personal information you provide to them with scholarships that you are eligible to apply for. This will minimize the time you spend browsing through lists of awards, and will give you more time to actually work on the application process itself. Beware of simple keyword search services or services that only ask a few questions about your background. Many such services will return hundreds of scholarships for you to wade through, wasting valuable time that you simply don't have. Look for services with easy-to-use, thorough profile pages that generate results closely matched to your profile.

* Up-to-Date Scholarship Information: Secondly, find a scholarship search service that provides accurate and up-to-date scholarship information. Reading requirements for scholarship programs from two years ago will not help you at all; in fact, using outdated information will simply slow your progress in actually securing scholarship funding for college. Remember, you need to find a service that offers scholarship information for the current academic year. Don't waste your time on websites with out-dated contact lists, broken application links, and discontinued programs.

* Focus on Finding Scholarships: Remember, the primary purpose of any scholarship search service should be to help you find scholarships. Avoid overly commercial websites that seem to focus instead on advertising and student offers, giveaways and subscriptions. Also, avoid sites that inundate you with annoying pop-up ads and unwanted email solicitations. You should not have to deal with numerous interruptions while you are using the scholarship search tool.

* An Easy Process: Make sure the service is set up to save you time. If you take the time to fill out the profile, make sure the information is saved so you don't have to start from scratch each time you want to look for more scholarships. Also, make sure there is a way to edit and update your profile, in case you change your major or improve your test scores or change your mind about the college or university you want to attend. Search services with such customer-oriented features will save you time and frustration in the search process, and that's what you should be aiming for…saving time, avoiding scams, and finding money to pay for college!

Succeeding in College

Just as in elementary school through high school, your success in college requires high motivation and effort, strong study skills, effective time management, and good test-taking strategies. These areas are covered in other screens here at www.how-to-study.com. But college success requires much more. Once you move from high school to college, you will generally find that students are more motivated and competent than in high school; teachers are more demanding; the work is more difficult; and students are expected to be independent. Further, if you are living away from home for the first time, you will have many new experiences. Here are some ideas that will help you succeed in college:

Have Clear Goals

College success requires commitment and a lot of hard work. You must be very certain about the importance of a college education.

* Be clear about why you are going to college.
* Establish specific goals you wish to accomplish.
* Know what it will take to reach these goals.
* Be certain your goals are consistent with your interests and abilities.
* Be flexible – change your goals if needed based on your experience as you progress through college.

Get Financial Aid if Needed

College is expensive. Even if you attend a public college or university and live at home, you still must pay for tuition, fees, and books. There are many sources of financial aid that can help you meet the high costs of college. Become aware of and pursue these sources.

* Consider all possible sources of financial aid in addition to your college’s financial aid office.
* Meet all deadlines for submitting applications and documentation.
* Respond quickly and completely to all requests for additional information.
* Be persistent in following up your application.
* If you do receive financial aid, meet all requirements to keep and continue your aid.

Manage Your Money

There are many ways to spend money in the college setting for other than education purposes. Take steps to ensure that you do not waste the money set aside for your college education.

* Set a budget and keep to it.
* Be careful about your use of credit cards. Don’t overspend. Pay balances promptly to avoid high interest costs.
* Open a checking account and carefully monitor your balance.
* Keep your cell phone under control. Those minutes and fees can really add up.

Stay Physically and Emotionally Healthy

You will need to be at your best to succeed in college. This means taking care of your body and maintaining a good frame of mind.

* Get enough sleep.
* Don’t rely on coffee and drinks that contain high doses of caffeine to provide you with energy. Foods such as pasta, peanut butter, non-sugar cereals, and fresh fruit are healthy alternatives to provide the energy you need.
* Avoid junk foods. Fast food is convenient but usually not good for you.
* Use the services of the student health office. These services typically include emergency treatment, low cost examinations, and low cost or free medication.
* Use the services of the counseling office. The professionals there can help you overcome feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety.

Choose a Professor Carefully

In college you get to select your schedule of classes. Most classes offer more than one section so that you can choose not just the day and time, but the professor who is teaching that section. Often you will find student ratings of professors on the Internet. You can get even more feedback by talking to other students. Try to choose a professor who demonstrates the following characteristics.

* Maintains adequate office hours.
* Provides constructive feedback.
* Adapts to different styles of learning.
* Grades fairly.
* Is highly competent in the subject being taught.
* Establishes clear and reasonable requirements.
* Provides a positive learning environment.

Work With Your Advisor

As a student you will be assigned a faculty advisor to help you with both academic and career issues. It is up to you to get the most out of this guidance.

* Know your advisor’s office location, schedule of office hours, and contact information.
* Schedule an appointment with your advisor at any time you have problems that affect your academic performance.
* Consider your advisor’s ideas when selecting your major or at any time you are considering changing your major or career goals.
* Have specific questions in mind whenever meeting with your advisor.

Make Good Use of the Library

You are going to spend a lot of your time in college at the library. Take full advantage of this major resource.

* Get to know the resources of the library as soon as you get to college.
* Learn to use its computer resources and card catalogs.
* Make good use of its equipment such as copy machines, microfiche readers, production facilities, etc.
* Check out its quiet study areas. Sign up for their use if required.

Get Involved in Campus Life

There is a lot more to college than just classes. A college campus is an exciting, dynamic environment that can provide you with many opportunities for enhancing your college experience.

* Join a student organization that is consistent with your interests. You will find many organizations from which to choose.
* Join a club in your major. This cannot only help you in your studies but can provide contacts that may be very useful in your future career.
* Join an intramural team. This is a great way to keep yourself in good physical shape and make new friends.
* Attend social events. Your college experience should not be all work and no play.

Yes – success in college takes effort. But this effort will provide benefits to you throughout your life. The ideas presented above can help you to make your college experience a successful one.

Biro Perencanaan dan Kerjasama Luar Negeri

Konsentrasi:

MANAJEMEN TEKNIK KEGEMPAAN

SEKILAS TENTANG MANAJEMEN TEKNIK KEGEMPAAN
